County Board looks at consolidating 3 departments

The McLeod County Board declared its intent to merge the planning and zoning and environmental services departments with the solid waste department at a workshop Tuesday morning.
The conversation came as the County Board debated whether it should fill its currently vacant solid waste director position, or create a combined position to oversee all three departments, with coordinator positions for each of the departments under the supervision of the director.

County Board debates funding requests from library system, McLeod County Historical Society

The McLeod County Board debated requested increases in funding to the Pioneerland Library System and the McLeod County Historical Society at a Tuesday morning workshop.
The library system is asking for a 2 percent increase in funding. Commissioner Ron Shimanski, who sits on the Pioneerland Board of Directors, said that Pioneerland was hit with a hefty health insurance premium increase, and that was part of what is driving the requested increase.

County Board lukewarm to changing some elected officials to appointed heads

McLeod County commissioners had a lukewarm response to the idea of making some elected officials appointed department heads.
The topic was discussed at Tuesday morning’s workshop session.
County Administrator Pat Melvin presented a spreadsheet that shows that many counties have made the traditionally elected auditor, treasurer and recorder positions into appointed department heads.
Commissioner Ron Shimanski said the demands of those positions were much more than when they were created over a century ago.

City of Glencoe will not raise levy in 2017

The city of Glencoe’s finance committee recommended a flat 2017 tax levy at its meeting Wednesday, Aug. 31.
The recommended tax preliminary levy of $2.27 million is down $344 from 2016.
According to state requirements, the City Council needs to certify a preliminary tax levy by Sept. 15.
The levy amount includes a 1 percent decrease in health insurance costs and a 2.5 percent increase in salaries and wages.

4th annual Sanctuary health, wellness retreat Sept. 17

REMAX Homes, Tim and Michaelee Jenkins, of Glencoe, are sponsoring their fourth annual Sanctuary health and wellness fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 17, at REMAX Homes, 1930 E. 10th St., Glencoe.
The day will feature seminars by doctors, nurses, nutrititionists, integrative health coaches and Qigong, self-defense, yoga and meditation instructors. An organic, gluten-free lunch will be served, and there will be a farmers’ market with fresh produce.

Labor Day weekend is traditionally the “last weekend of summer,” and most Minnesotans are not going to spend it glued to their televisions.
But many of us did exactly that, probably for the first time since reports came of Princess Diana’s death in a car accident in 1997. Many, many people spent that Labor Day weekend watching as reports unfolded in the aftermath of her Aug. 27 death.

A large number of McLeod County 4-H’ers earned ribbons and awards for their livestock and animal projects at the recent Minnesota State Fair. They include:
