Spikers top NYA in five

The Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team claimed its inaugural victory of the season by defeating host Norwood Young America in five games (24-26, 25-22, 13-25, 25-21, 15-13) on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
“I’m exhausted and didn’t even play,” coach Lori Schwirtz said. “It was a long night, however, hard work, teamwork and discipline paid off. The girls never gave up and really fought for every point.”

Hutch knocks off Blue Jays at state

Plato’s hopes of winning a second consecutive state championship were thwarted by an upstart neighbor as Hutchinson defeated the Blue Jays 4-2 in the Class C quarterfinals on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Veteran’s Memorial Field in Hutchinson.
The juggernaut that had been the Plato offense – the Blue Jays had outscored their first three state opponents by a combined score of 28-4 – was largely stopped short of home plate by the Huskies.

Girls’ soccer opens fall with 2-1 record

It was a topsy-turvy start to the season for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team.
The squad got its season off to a 2-0 start under new coach David Frasier, adding a 4-0 win at Worthington on Thursday, Aug. 30 to a season-opening 4-0 win at Rocori three days earlier.
However, the rigors of competing in the Wright County Conference reared an early head, as the Panthers were blanked 7-0 by visiting Mound Westonka in GSL’s home and circuit opener on Thursday, Sept. 1.

Panthers overcome Wildcats in overtime

It was quite a start to the season for the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team as the Panthers opened their 2016 campaign with a spirited 27-21 overtime victory over New London-Spicer on Friday, Sept. 2, at Stevens Seminary Stadium.
On a picturesque night for football, the two former Wright County Conference gridiron rivals battled in a back-and-forth contest that was hampered only by the second-half onslaught of marauding mosquitoes.
