Former, current posse members celebrate group’s 40th anniversary

The McLeod County Sheriff’s Posse has provided security at dances, assisted at fatal accidents and homicides, monitored campgrounds and lakes, helped at Winstock and the county fair, searched for missing persons and provided a multitude of other services to the county in its 40-year history.
Current and former members of the posse gathered Saturday afternoon at Oak Leaf Park in Glencoe to celebrate the 40-year history of the group.

Wet weather hinders school building project

Superindent Chris Sonju and Business manager Michelle Sander gave the Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board an update on the district’s building project on Monday night, noting that the wet weather continues to hinder progress.
Sonju said people will start to see formations of the addition in the next couple of weeks.

GSL students learn about Civil War from true history buff, expert

Glencoe-Silver Lake history students got to hear about the Civil War from a true expert Wednesday, Sept. 7, when Jeffrey S. Williams, director of media relations for Minnesota Civil War 150, spoke to Tom Schoper’s history classes.
Williams, a veteran of the Gulf wars, has long been a Civil War history buff, visiting battle sites and participating in re-enactments.
In a short 45 minutes, Williams took students through the war’s history, hitting the highlights along the way.

Supreme Court rejects DFL petition

The Minnesota Supreme Court rightfully rejected an appeal from the Minnesota DFL to remove Donald Trump and his running mate from Minnesota’s general election ballot.

Get the Judd Avenue project finished

I walk by it every morning, and little has changed. The new Judd Avenue street work looks much like it did when the county broke ground last spring. It remains an eyesore and an embarrassment.
Judd Avenue, after ground was opened up, was suddenly put on hold when unexpected problems arose, and the contractor pulled off the job for another work site as the city and county worked out the problems.

Ban Minnesota Statute 429 from city of Glencoe

To the Editor:
An evil thing has come to Glencoe. It is called Minnesota Statute 429. It is an easy way out for top city staff and the council to balance their budgets with little regard to the property owner and his assessment.
The council needs to use the funds we are already charging taxpayers for our roads, water, sewer, and storm sewer projects. This unfunded mandate of assessments on properties is totally unacceptable. It could be compared to a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

POW/MIA recognition day Sept. 16

To the Editor:
The National POW/MIA Recognition Day is Sept. 16, 2016. Many Americans across the United States pause to remember the sacrifices and service of those who were prisoners of war (POW), as well as those who are missing in action (MIA), and their families.
