Driver in fatal crash sentenced to probation, jail

Emily Louise Givens has been sentenced to a year of probation and 30 days in jail on a misdemeanor charge of careless driving.
Givens was convicted in September of careless driving in regard to the April 2015 death of bicyclist Penny Verdeck of Glencoe, who was killed when her bicycle was struck by Givens’ vehicle just north of Glencoe.

Minnesota Nice continues tradition of giving to soldiers

Linda Krueger’s basement once again looks like a mini version of a busy department store — piles of goods waiting to be sorted and packaged, while already packed boxes are stacked up, ready to be shipped out to soldiers who are deployed away from home for the holidays.
As the packages are shipped out, thank yous are quickly returning via email and regular mail.

Accidents abound on state highways over holiday weekend

A Stewart man was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon, in the first of four accidents that occurred over the Thanksgiving weekend.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the accident was reported at 1:54 p.m. and occurred on Highway 15 just south of Hutchinson. Leo M. Murphy, 56, of Fairfax, was southbound on Highway 15 in a 2005 Ford F-350, pulling a trailer, and was slowing to enter a residence on the left when the trailer was rear-ended by a 1997 Infiniti QX4 wagon driven by Ryan Redden, 35, of Stewart.

Gymnasts return many familiar faces

It’s been a busy few weeks for the Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team as the Panthers get ready for the 2016-17 season opener on Saturday, Dec. 10 at Northfield.
“We are getting there,” coach Kim Hahn said. “The first month before our first meet is always a little chaotic in that we have to choreograph routines for each of the events per our requirements.  But when the routines are all complete then practices work around current skills and adding in new ones.”

Wrestlers return to the mat

Expectations are tempered for this season’s Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team, but while numbers are a bit down with approximately 25 wrestlers at the upper levels, there’s still good reason for optimism concerning this year’s Panthers.
“We’re down a bit number-wise, but it’s a real good group of kids,” coach Lance Wurm said. “They work real hard.”

Cagers tune up for season

In both the first and final tuneup for the 2016-17 season, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team competed amongst a four-team scrimmage at Eden Prairie High School on Saturday, Nov. 26.
“It was a good day,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “I was feeling good, actually pretty giddy, afterward.”
The Panthers opened by scrimmaging Lakeville North – the Class AAAA state tournament runner-up from last season.
