Monahan sets new girls' hoop scoring record; Panthers clicking

It was quite the week for Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball. The Panthers won two of three games – clinching a goal of playing at least .500 basketball before the return of forward Zoe Christensen and gave a top sectional opponent a fight to the finish on its home court before falling with optimism.
Oh, and there was the matter of crowning a new all-time scoring leader. 
“Not a bad week,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said with a smile.

Silver Lake Fire Department battles large shed fire

The Silver Lake Fire Department was called out in the wee hours of Sunday morning to battle a machine shed blaze at the David Pokornowski residence on 228th Street, northeast of Silver Lake.

Fire Chief Dale Kosek said the department was paged at about 2:20 a.m. After hearing from a deputy that the 50-foot by 100-foot shed was fully engulfed, the department called for mutual aid from three area departments.

Glencoe man injured in accident

Mitchell J. Schultz, 31, of Glencoe, was injured early this morning when his vehicle rolled on Highway 22 near Shilling Lake Road, New Auburn. The accident was reported at 12:05 a.m.

Gymnasts ready for some home cooking

The Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team made their last road trip of the regular season last week, traveling to a dual meet at Howard Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 12, as well as an eight-team invitational in Farmington on Saturday, Jan. 16.

The Panthers recorded 119.875 points in finishing second to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted and 114.75 in placing sixth at Farmington.

Boys' hoop takes two on the chin

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team knew that last week was going to be fraught with difficulty.

And it was.

Facing two of the top teams in the Wright County Conference West in Watertown-Mayer and Annandale, the Panthers took two solid losses square on the chin to drop to 4-11 on the season.

“It was sure to be a tough one,” coach Robb DeCorsey said of the two-game stretch. “We really needed to play well – and didn’t.”

With the season just rounding the halfway point, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team continued to sport a .500 record in spite of back-to-back defeats against the top two teams in the Wright County Conference West last week.

After opening 2016 with a pair of victories to hit a high water mark of 7-5 on the year, the Panthers were knocked down a few pegs in a 78-59 loss at WCC West leader Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday, Jan. 12 and a 51-45 home setback vs. conference No. 2 Annandale three nights later.

California woman seriously injured in Hwy. 7 accident

A California woman was seriously injured and a Winsted woman had non-life-threatening injuries after a two-vehicle, head-on crash on Highway 7 Wednesday morning at about 9:35 a.m.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Donna Nardor, 55, of San Leandro, California, was westbound on Highway 7 in a Toyota BTM when the vehicle slid on icy roads, crossed the center line, and hit an eastbound 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix, driven by Tara Boehlke, 26, of Winsted. The Toyota flipped end over end; the Pontiac came to rest in a ditch.

SL Dollar General store moves one step further

The reality of a Dollar General store in Silver Lake is a little closer after a public hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 12, before the city’s planning commission.
 
Overland Engineering, the company that builds Dollar General stores, applied for a variance to a city ordinance in regards to the required number of parking spaces for a retail property.
 

Stewart City Council tables fire request to buy mini-pumper

The Stewart City Council tabled a request from the fire department to purchase a 2012 mini-pumper.
 
A resolution regarding the purchase came before the Council at its Monday, Jan. 11, meeting.
 
The 2012 Ford 550 mini-pumper had a purchase price of $137,500. The department sought an additional $10,000 to buy equipment for the truck.
 

Stewart City Council makes 2016 annual appointments, designations

The Stewart City Council made its annual designations and appointments at its Monday, Jan. 11, meeting.
 
One position that was not filled was that of the emergency management director. Mayor Jason Peirce said there were no qualified candidates at the moment.
