Firefighters battle flames, sub-zero temps

Brownton, Stewart and Winthrop firefighters battled flames and subzero temperatures Monday at a house fire on 50th Street, just west of Tagus Avenue, southwest of Brownton.
The fire was reported by a passerby at about 7:50 a.m., and responding deputies reported that it was fully engulfed.
The Brownton Fire Department called for mutual aid from Stewart and Winthrop, who provided water and manpower.
The home was a rental property, but no one had been living it for more than a week.

Christianson re-elected GSL School Board chair for 2016

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board re-elected Clark Christianson as the 2016 School Board chairperson at its organizational meeting Monday, Jan. 11.
Board Member Jamie Alsleben was elected vice chairperson, Board Member Anne Twiss was re-elected as the clerk and Board Member Kevin Kuester was elected as the treasurer.

10th annual Blizzard Blast Friday, Jan. 29, in Glencoe

The 10th annual Blizzard Blast is set for Friday, Jan. 29, at the Glencoe City Center.
The annual Blizzard Blast is a fundraiser for the Allina Health Hospice Foundation, which provides hospice care to patients and their families in the area.
This year’s event starts at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 29, and includes emcee Dr. John Bergseng, guest speaker Lou Ann Perschau, and entertainment by the band South 40, as well as a catered meal by Chef Craig, live and silent auctions and raffles.

Public Health offering free radon kits this month

McLeod County Public Health is offering free radon test kits on a first-come, first- serve basis to residents in the McLeod County area during “Radon Action Month,” which is January.
Residents can obtain a free test kit at the McLeod County Public Health office at 1805 Ford Ave. in Glencoe, or at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1065 Fifth Ave. SE in Hutchinson.

Sheriff issues scam alert

The McLeod Count Sheriff’s Office has issued a scam alert regarding texts that appear to be coming from MidCountry Bank, although they are not.
The text message says that an issue has been detected on a bank account, which has been locked. Recipients are asked to call a number and confirm personal details to re-activate the account. The number on the text is 800-819-9021.
The sheriff’s office advises people to not respond to the text or dial the phone number.
