St. Cloud State fall dean’s list

St. Cloud State University has announced its fall-semester dean’s list. Among the over 1,300 students named to the list are Carolin Goebel of Brownton, enrolled in the accounting program; Tate Lilienthal, Glencoe, majoring in communications arts and literature; and Courtney Schroepfer, Glencoe, majoring in early childhood education. Students must have a grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale to be named to the dean’s list.
 

Teen to attend inauguration


Cory Becker, son of Curtis and Shelly Becker of Gibbon and granddaughter of Beverly (Mrs. Halbert) Becker of New Auburn, managed to get four tickets to President-Elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, set for Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C. Becker, 16, is a junior at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (GFW), where he also is a student representative on the school board. Cory Becker also will be a page for state Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen, R-Glencoe, in February.
 

St. Pius X students to participate in raffle

Starting Jan. 13, students at St. Pius X School in Glencoe will be selling raffle tickets as part of the Catholic Schools Raffle. Just one $5 bill gives buyers the opportunity to win a 2017 Jeep Compass (or $20,000 in cash), vacation packages, cool gadgets or other great prizes totaling $40,000 in value.
St. Pius X and the other 81 participating schools will keep 100 percent of every $5 ticket sold thanks to raffle sponsor Catholic United Financial. The St. Paul-based company covers the entire cost of the raffle, including prizes, ticket printing and promotional materials.

Stewart Council’s new year off to a quiet start

The Stewart City Council breezed through its first meeting of 2017 in about an hour Monday night.
The City Council discussed  its proposed north bypass road, to be known as Mill Street, with engineer Andy Kehren of Bolton & Menk.
At issue is whether the city should bid the project with turning lanes off County Road 7. The new road will extend from County Road 7 on the northern edge of the city to Form-A-Feed, which is located on the northwest corner of the city.

Silver Lake City Council to seek loan for demolition

The Silver Lake City Council asked City Clerk Kerry Venier to move forward with a loan application for the demolition of four buildings on Main Street at its Jan. 3 meeting.
The city currently owns two of the buildings that have been condemned, and will look to purchase the two adjoining buildings.
All four buildings are currently unoccupied and have been for some time.
The city is seeking a loan of $200,000, which would include demolition, interior asbestos abatement, and acquisition of the two additional properties.

Martha M.E. Schultz, 99, Hutchinson

Martha Marie Elizabeth Schultz, 99, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton. The Rev. R. Allan Reed will officiate, and burial will follow in the Brownton City Cemetery in Brownton. Visitation will be Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church.

Judith Martineau, 74, of Hutchinson

Judith “Judy” Ann Martineau, 74, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 9, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton with the Rev. R. Allan Reed officiating. Dawn Wolter was the organist, and congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “Just As I Am.”

Marella F. Kemmer, 96, of Lakeville

Marella F. Kemmer, 96, of Lakeville, formerly of Moorhead, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2017.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 20165 Heath Ave., Lakeville, with interment in Moorhead Memorial  Gardens. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to funeral services.
Casket bearers will be Dean Kemmer, David Kemmer, Jeff Kemmer, Bradley Kemmer, Jayson Stiefel and Christi Stiefel.

Arnold L. Hepner, 82, of Hackensack

Arnold Leroy Hepner, 82, of Hackensack, died Dec. 28, 2016.
Services were held Jan. 6, 2017, at the Dobratz-Hantge Chapel in Hutchinson, with the Rev. Ronald Mathison officiating.
Urn bearers were Alisa Schmidt, Jonathan Larson, Joshua Larson and Joel Larson. Cody Schmidt was the honorary urn bearer. Military honors were by the Hutchinson Memorial Rifle Squad. Interment was in the Bohemian National Cemetery, rural Silver Lake.

Arnold D. Hanson, 80, of Faribault

Arnold “Arnie” D. Hanson, 80, of Faribault, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Faribault, with interment at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault, with military rites by the Rice County Central Veterans Association.
