GSL Knowledge Bowl teams compete at CMCS, St. Francis

This past weekend, Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Knowledge Bowl teams went two directions. The seventh-and eighth-grade teams went to Central Minnesota Christian School (CMCS) in Prinsburg, while the high school teams went to St. Francis High School for its Rumble on the Rum. (CMCS is a relatively small school in the region, and had asked GSL to send no more than three teams, but GSL has seven to eight teams.)

Minnesota Nice sends record number of packages

Minnesota Nice, a local effort that provides care packages to military personnel during the holiday season, sent a record number of packages this year.
Linda Krueger, who helps coordinate the effort, said that 284 packages were shipped this season, 19 more than were shipped last season.
“We really need to thank everyone who donated and helped,” said Krueger of Minnesota Nice’s record season.

County Board changes Trailblazer representation

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to replace Commissioner Ron Shimanski as a representative on the Trailblazer Transit Joint Powers Board.
The board took up a motion that had been tabled from its Jan. 3 meeting, in which Commissioner Doug Krueger moved that he and commissioners Joe Nagel and Rich Pohlmeier be appointed to the joint powers board.

Common Cup to open thrift store in Glencoe

Common Cup Ministry will be opening a thrift store in Glencoe sometime in mid-February, it was announced Monday.
Bev Bonte of Common Cup said the store will open in the old Dueber’s Store on 11th Street, on the east side of Snap Fitness. It will be called “Thrift Shop of Common Cup Ministry.”
Bonte said proceeds from the store will be used to help Common Cup achieve its mission of helping local residents in need or crisis.

County Board approves historical society funding on split vote

On a 3-2 vote Tuesday, the McLeod County Board of Commissioners approved continued funding for a historical community outreach position.
The position actually began last year, and the board had approved about $6,700 to fund the outreach coordinator through the end of 2016, with the stipulation that a “punch list” of items be evaluated before it considered continued funding for the program.
The coordinator position helps communities and historical groups in the county accomplish their historic preservation goals.

Help through hospice - Glencoe couple appreciates local service

Long before they needed the service, Bob and Sandy Tibbits of Glencoe have supported ConnectCare — later taken over by Allina — by attending the annual Blizzard Blast fundraiser.
Bob Tibbits said the couple attended the Blast for several years before they began spending winters in Arizona.
Which is why, after Sandy Tibbits was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease), they looked to the local hospice program for assistance as Sandy’s disease progress.

Hite looks forward to retirement after long career in hardware store

Most people in Glencoe have probably walked into Hite Hardware on 11th Street in Glencoe, not knowing what they were looking for, but walking out with exactly what they needed.
Greg Hite, owner of Hite Hardware, retired in mid-November when he closed the doors to his store after 27 years in Glencoe and 46 years in the hardware business.
Hite announced the retirement sale in late September.
“I wanted to retire by 70,” he said, which is be coming up in August.
