Streich strikes as Panthers win at Annandale

In what will likely be known for years as “The Carsen Streich Game,” the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team remained in the catbird seat for a top seed in the upcoming Section 2AAA Tournament with a 35-31 win at Annandale on Friday, Oct. 13.
Streich, the Panthers’ starting running back, galloped for 235 rushing yards and all five GSL touchdowns in the come-from-behind victory.
With the help of a heaping helping of superior offensive line play and blocking, Streich ran for long scores of 61, 48 and 45 yards to go with endzone runs of 16 and 14 yards as well.

Soccer season ends in sectional opener

A 3-0 loss at Waseca in the opening round of the Section 2A Tournament ended the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team’s season on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Goalkeeper Zoe Christensen, playing in her final game with the Panthers, made 15 saves on the 18 shots she faced in the defeat. In 10 games as keeper, Christensen made 177 saves on 209 total shots faced. She recorded one shutout on the year and had a goals against average of 3.46.

Cross-country teams win at Watertown-Mayer

It was a clean sweep for the Glencoe-Silver Lake cross-country teams at the Watertown-Mayer Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 10, as both the girls’ and boys’ squads took first place in their respective races.
Tony Fischer led the GSL boys to a team win with a third-place individual finish in a time of 17:36.62. Jakob Rusten placed sixth in 17:54.17, with Connor Hallaway in 10th at 18:25.45.
AJ Anderson Sanchez and Oscar Pena rounded out the Panther team scoring by taking 11th and 12th, respectively, with times of 18:27.34 and 18:28.41.

Volleyball wins by sweep once again

Another day, another sweep for the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team. The Panthers swept their fifth-straight opponent in a three-set win against visiting Dassel-Cokato on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Playing on “Dig Pink” cancer fundraiser night, the Panthers overwhelmed the Chargers. GSL got out to a big lead early and never looked back in winning 25-13, 25-14, 25-18.
In addition to a fifth-consecutive sweep, it was the Panthers’ sixth-straight win and 11th victory in the last 12 contests.

Tennis season comes to a close

The 2017 season officially came to a close for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team in the opening round of individual play in the Section 2A Tournament at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 12.
None of the Panthers competing in the tournament made it out of the first round in either the singles or doubles competitions.
Justine Helmbrecht, seeded fifth in the singles bracket, fell to a rally by St. Peter’s Caitline Salfer (6-7 (7-5), 6-0, 6-4). Kaitie Doolittle lost 6-2, 6-1 to seventh-seeded Gretchen Dwyer of LeSueur-Henderson.
