GSL volleyball wins home finale in playoff opener

A three-set sweep of visiting Sibley East in the opening round of the Section 2AA playoffs on Thursday, Oct. 26, gave the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team a 5-0 record in the school’s gymnasium this season.
“Kind of a cool feeling and history making,” coach Lori Schwirtz said of the 5-0 record in the new gym, a mark christened by a come-from-behind defeat of Belle Plaine on Sept. 25.
More urgently, the win over Sibley East also secured the Panthers a spot in the North subsection semifinals.

Metcalf, Rusten run to state meet

Once again, Glencoe-Silver Lake will be represented by multiple runners at this year’s Class A State Cross-Country Meet, scheduled to be held on Saturday afternoon on the campus of St. Olaf College in Northfield.
This time around, Panther girls’ runner Malayh Metcalf will be joined by Jakob Rusten of the boys’ team after the pair qualified for the season’s ultimate competition via their finishes in the Section 2A title meet last week.
Metcalf, an eighth-grader, punched her ticket for a second consecutive trip to state after finishing eighth in the 2A girls’ race on Thursday, Oct. 26.

Panthers maul tigers, advance to section final

After falling to Belle Plaine in the sectional semifinals the past two seasons, the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team dished out a heapin’ helpin’ of revenge in the Section 2AAA semis on Saturday, Oct. 28, blanking the Tigers 34-0 at Stevens Seminary Stadium.
The Panthers dominated all facets of the game, taking the lead for good on a touchdown scamper by running back Carsen Streich with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half.
