Maher begins duties as First District judge

Appointed by Governor Mark Dayton, Judge Jessica J.W. Maher began her judicial duties as a district judge in McLeod County in mid-August with her formal investiture ceremony taking place Aug. 14. Maher replaced Judge Terrence Conkel, who retired in August.

Joyce Annette Rund, 74, Battle Lake

Joyce Annette Rund, 74, of Battle Lake, died Thursday morning, Oct. 5, 2017, at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
The funeral service is today (Wednesday, Oct. 11) at 1 p.m. at Rock Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Elbow Lake, with the Rev. Zinta Sundby officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, Elbow Lake. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Norma Frieda Engelmann, 92, of Plato

Norma Frieda (Panning) Engelmann, 92, of Waconia, formerly of Plato, died peacefully on Oct. 1, 2017, at the Auburn Home in Waconia.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 8, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato with the Rev. Tyson Mastin officiating. Yvonne Schuette was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Beautiful Savior,” “When Peace, Like a River,” “Abide With Me” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives.”

James Milton Schwarze, 91, Glencoe

James Milton Schwarze, 91, of Glencoe, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, after a courageous fight with ALS, at his home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m., at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Jon Niebuhr officiating. Jan Heins will be the organist. Congregational hymns will be “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,” “Now Thank We All Our God” and “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less.”
Interment will be in the Glencoe City Cemetery.

Robert ‘Cuz’ Cousins, 64, of NYA

Robert “Cuz” Cousins, 64, of Norwood Young America, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at his residence.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m., at the Johnson Funeral Home, 141 First St. E, Waconia, with Chaplain Michelle Hienz as the officiant. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. There will be a reception and a time for remembering immediately after the service at the Roy Clay Community Building, 327 Elm St. W, in Norwood Young America.

Local students on dean’s list

Melissa Mallak and Katlin Stockman, both of Glencoe, were named to the summer 2017 dean’s list at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. Dean’s list members have achieved a grade point average of 3.75 or above on a 4.0 scale.

Son born to Bussler family

Lyndsay and Derek Bussler of Bloomington announce the birth of their son, Jack Walter, who arrived Aug. 29, 2017, at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Jack weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 21 inches long at birth. He is welcomed by his sister, Claire; grandparents, Mark and Diane Jahnke of Brownton and Randy and Verona Bussler of Glencoe; and great-grandparents, Vernetta Brinkman of Glencoe and Joan Jahnke of Hastings.

Brownton City Council votes to reinstate, increase library funding

The Brownton City Council voted Tuesday, Oct. 3, to restore the funding it had withheld from the Pioneerland Library System, after hearing that the Brownton Public Library was fully staffed.
Head Librarian Jackee Fountain also gave a report on the activities and materials that are offered at the library.
Fountain said two people have been hired to help staff the Brownton library, one from the Glencoe area and one from the Lester Prairie area. In recent months, the library has not always been open for its full 20-hour schedule because of a lack of staffing.
