Duane Pagenkopf, 80, of Stewart, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, at United Hospital in St. Paul.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Dec. 23, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart with the Rev. Mahlon Bekedam officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Nancy M. Wraspir, 72, of Hutchinson

Nancy Wraspir, 72, of Hutchinson, formerly of Silver Lake, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Dec. 21, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake with the Rev. Anthony J. Stubeda officiating. Alice Nowak was the organist. Music was by the Holy Family Catholic Church Choir. Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” “Holy God, Praise Thy Name,” “Panis Angelicus” and “On This Day, O Beautiful Mother.”

DeWayne ‘Duke’ Hanson, 72, Glencoe

DeWayne “Duke” Hanson, 72, of Glencoe, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, after a short illness, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 22, at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Katherine Rood and the Rev. Vicki Toutges officiating. Peggy Hatlestad was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Thine is the Glory,” “Standing on the Promises,” “Joy to the World” and “Blessed Assurance.”

Cordella L. Schultz, 87, of Silver Lake

Cordella Laura (Gebhardt) Schultz, 87, of Silver Lake, formerly of Glencoe, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 22, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Peter Adelsen officiating. Paul Otte was the organist. Soloist Chuck Thiel performed “Abide With Me” and “Away in a Manger/Silent Night.” Congregational hymns were “Abide With Me” and “Just Keep Me Nearer the Cross.”

Madge Dammann, 93, Washington

Madge Ilene Gordon Dammann was born Nov. 9, 1924, to Jesse Noble Gordon and Bonnie Jean Wheeler Gordon in Sunnyslope, Chelan County, Washington, and died at the age of 93 on Dec. 8, 2017, at Aegis Assisted Living in Lynwood, Washington.

What a difference a year makes. The Trailblazer Transit Joint Powers Board had a graduation of sorts on Thursday morning of last week. First, it finalized a new joint powers agreement after months of negotiating among its member entities. Second, it decided it no longer needs its attorney to attend every meeting.

A few tongue-in-cheek ideas for Glencoe tourism

To the Editor:
I read in The Chronicle last weekthat the Glencoe Tourism Committee had a brainstorming meeting. I wasn’t aware we had a tourism committee. I wasn’t aware we had tourism? I have a few ideas.
“Glencoe, it’s not happening here.” That may be a good slogan for our town, because there is no sense lying to ourselves, Glencoe has little to offer a tourist. That may sound negative, but bear with me, I plan to turn that around in this letter.

2018 will be as intriguing as 2017

This was an interesting year that’s just passed, wasn’t it? And here’s the thing: I suspect 2018 will be just as intriguing.
Let’s start with some good news. The economy had a good year in 2017, seeing overall growth, subdued inflation, progress on wages, and even some signs that economic growth is reaching the poor.

Federal funds designated for Highway 212 corridor

Minnesota has received additional federal highway funds designated for improvements to highways that are important freight corridors and some of that funding will be used locally on U.S. Highway 212.

GSL alumni dies in automobile crash

Nikole Beneke, 42, a Glencoe-Silver Lake High School alumni, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, in a car accident in Carver County.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Beneke was a passenger in a 2012 Chevrolet Captiva, driven by Jonathan Breyon Burge, 40, of Minneapolis, which was westbound on Highway 7 in Watertown Township when the vehicle drifted left, met a driveway and vaulted into a tree. The accident was reported at 3:47 a.m.
Beneke was not wearing a seat belt, and was declared deceased at the scene.
