A few tongue-in-cheek ideas for Glencoe tourism

To the Editor:
I read in The Chronicle last weekthat the Glencoe Tourism Committee had a brainstorming meeting. I wasn’t aware we had a tourism committee. I wasn’t aware we had tourism? I have a few ideas.
“Glencoe, it’s not happening here.” That may be a good slogan for our town, because there is no sense lying to ourselves, Glencoe has little to offer a tourist. That may sound negative, but bear with me, I plan to turn that around in this letter.

2018 will be as intriguing as 2017

This was an interesting year that’s just passed, wasn’t it? And here’s the thing: I suspect 2018 will be just as intriguing.
Let’s start with some good news. The economy had a good year in 2017, seeing overall growth, subdued inflation, progress on wages, and even some signs that economic growth is reaching the poor.

Federal funds designated for Highway 212 corridor

Minnesota has received additional federal highway funds designated for improvements to highways that are important freight corridors and some of that funding will be used locally on U.S. Highway 212.

GSL alumni dies in automobile crash

Nikole Beneke, 42, a Glencoe-Silver Lake High School alumni, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, in a car accident in Carver County.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Beneke was a passenger in a 2012 Chevrolet Captiva, driven by Jonathan Breyon Burge, 40, of Minneapolis, which was westbound on Highway 7 in Watertown Township when the vehicle drifted left, met a driveway and vaulted into a tree. The accident was reported at 3:47 a.m.
Beneke was not wearing a seat belt, and was declared deceased at the scene.

Five from Plato Lions Club

Five members of the Plato Lions Club — Kari Graupmann, Darlene Lilienthal, Dave Ruschmeier, Tom Smith and Stacy Sohns — have been named as Melvin Jones Fellows by Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) in recognition of their commitment to serving the world community. Melvin Jones is the founder of Lions Clubs International. It is one of the foundation’s highest recognitions, honoring commitment to humanitarian service.

New courthouse entry open, jail pod occupied

The first phase of the McLeod County jail expansion and courthouse security project is complete, with the new entrance on the east side of the building now open to courthouse visitors.
McLeod County Sheriff Scott Rehmann said the new jail cell “pods” also are complete and are in use. The new space adds 17 beds to the former 35-bed space for a total of 52 beds. The layout of the new area allows the expansion without adding jail staff.

Trailblazer finalizes new joint powers agreement

The Trailblazer Joint Powers Board finalized its new joint powers agreement Thursday morning.
The agreement already had been approved by the three entities that make up Trailblazer — McLeod County, Sibley County and Wright County Area Transportation (WCAT).

Here’s a look back at 2017, gleaned from the headlines of The McLeod County Chronicle:
Jan. 4 — Glencoe Regional Health Services announced its planned $25 million long-term care remodeling and expansion project.
The McLeod County Board of Commissioners chose Joe Nagel as its chair and Doug Krueger as its vice chair. The former chair and vice chair were Paul Wright and Ron Shimanski, respectively.

The City of Silver Lake is in the process of developing a wellhead protection plan for its drinking water supply wells. The completed wellhead protection plan, Part 2, draft for this system as required in the Minnesota Wellhead Protection Rule (part 4720.5350, subparts 1-3) is available for review at City Hall. Consistent with the Wellhead Protection Rule (part 4720.5350, subpart 4), a Public Hearing has been scheduled on January 2nd at 6:30 PM at Silver Lake Auditorium, 320 Main Street W, to discuss issues and address all comments related to the Plan.
