Two injured in crash just west of Glencoe

Two people were hurt in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 22, just west of Glencoe, on Monday morning. The accident was reported at 8:30 a.m.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Ibrahain Said Hassan, 21, of Minneapolis, was eastbound on Highway 212 in a 2012 Freightliner straight truck, and Brooke Christine Halonen, 20, of Cokato, was southbound on Highway 22 when the vehicles collided.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Halonen was taken by ambulance to Glencoe Regional Health Services Hospital. Hassan was not transported for his injuries.

Vehicle, deceased male found in ditch

A 48-year-old Cohasset man was found deceased in a vehicle in a ditch in Renville County Thursday, Dec. 14.
The Renville County Sheriff’s Office reported that it received a call about 10:32 a.m. that day regarding a vehicle that was on its roof at the bottom of a drainage ditch in a farm field north of Highway 212 about one-quarter mile east of Hector. The ditch was located in a farm field about one-fourth of a mile from any nearby road.

Hutchinson man hurt in car crash

Philip Gordon Graves, 73, of Hutchinson, was injured in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 7 and Babcock Avenue near Lester Prairie Friday, Dec. 15, at about 7:30 p.m.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Graves was driving a 2016 Kia Soul westbound on Highway 7, and Trinity Kadeejah Lawrence, 22, of Carver, was southbound on Babcock Avenue. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

City Council finalizes 2018 levy, budget

The Glencoe City Council passed a resolution to approve the 2018 budget and tax levy at its Monday night meeting.
In a memo from City Administrator Mark Larson, who was absent from the meeting, it was noted that only one citizen had requested information on the budget and tax levy since the truth-in-taxation hearing on Dec. 4.
The General Fund levy is set at $1.577 million with the Debt Service levy set at $806,000 which brings a total of $2.383 million, a 4.886 percent increase from last year’s levy.

County Board OKs Morningside actions

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a couple of items in preparation for the Morningside Avenue extension project in Glencoe, which will most like be constructed in 2019.
The project is considered the third phase of the Morningside improvements, and will extend the road from 11th Street to 16th Street. Morningside also is McLeod County’s County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 15.

Group brainstorms ideas for promoting Glencoe

About 20 people attended a Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee brainstorming meeting at Gert & Erma’s on Dec. 14, with a goal of coming up with the committee’s next project.
Those 20 people represented over 14 businesses, including Ameriprise Financial, Miller Manufacturing, Home Solutions, Fahey Sales, Lighthouse Church, McLeod For Tomorrow, the McLeod County Historical Society, First Minnesota Bank, Glencoe Family Chiropractic, Security Bank & Trust and Twin Cities & Western Railroad, among others.

Boys’ basketball suffers first defeat of season

A three-game winning streak to begin the season came to an end over the weekend for the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team.
The Panthers allowed the most points this season and scored their fewest in a 54-45 loss to visiting Sibley East on Saturday, Dec. 16, to fall to 3-1 on the season.
As has been its ritual so far this season, GSL was involved in a close game at halftime, trailing the Wolverines 22-19 at the break.
However, unlike in their first three matchups, the Panthers never found that extra gear in the second half and instead suffered a nine-point defeat.

Girls’ hoop bounces back from first loss

The high from toppling Hutchinson did not last long for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team.
Just four days after knocking off the No. 1-ranked team in Class AAA, the Panthers suffered their first defeat of the season in a 69-54 thumping at the hands of visiting Mayer Lutheran on Tuesday, Dec. 12.
GSL trailed the visiting Crusaders 34-27 at halftime and was outscored 35-27 over the final 18 minutes en route to defeat No. 1 of the young campaign.

Matmen place fifth at Richfield tournament

The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team improved to 3-4 in dual meets this season by means of a fifth-place finish at the Richfield Duals on Saturday, Dec. 16.
After falling 43-33 to Bloomington Kennedy in the opening round, the Panthers took down the tournament host Spartans 60-24 and the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks 46-34 to secure the fifth-place standing.
Against Kennedy, GSL/LP took a 27-0 lead before succumbing in the higher weight classes.
After Caleb Besmehn won by forfeit at 106 pounds, Carter Ruschmeier needed just 42 seconds to win by fall at 113.

Dewayne ‘Duke’ Hanson, 72, of Glencoe

Dewayne “Duke” Hanson, 72, of Glencoe, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
Funeral services and visitation are pending.
Arrangements are with the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.
