Making the most of apprenticeships

By U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar
D-Minnesota
It’s no secret that our workforce is one of our state’s greatest assets. Minnesota is home to some of the best-educated, hardest-working people in the country. We have the numbers to back that up. As of October, the unemployment rate here was just 3.3 percent, well below the national average. When U.S. News named Minnesota the third best state to live in earlier this year, it cited our outstanding labor force participation. And last year, employment in Minnesota grew at a faster rate than in any of our neighboring states.

You can help with reforming Congress

By Lee H. Hamilton
The first three words of the U.S. Constitution are, “We the People.” The Constitution itself, our institutions of government, the democratic process — all were established to give Americans a voice in their own governance. We are still striving to make that vision real for all, but we are closer than ever.

Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Knowledge Bowl teams won first place in varsity, junior, and junior high competitions at New London-Spicer (NLS) Saturday. NLS ran a quick meet, with a 45-question written round, and three oral rounds rather than the normal four, but GSL adjusted to the changes and did well.

Public invited to brainstorm on Glencoe tourism planning

The Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce tourism committee invites the public to attend an open meeting at Gert & Erma’s Thursday, Dec. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., to help brainstorm the next tourism committee project for the city of Glencoe.
Tourism committee member Sharon Hoese said the tourism committee is relatively new to the Chamber of Commerce, but so far the tourism committee has helped with the updated chamber website, new business signs pointing to business districts, the flower baskets along downtown and, most recently, the new Christmas lights and the forthcoming banners.

County to investigate bubbling floor in commercial building at fairgrounds

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners voted Thursday afternoon to spend $7,535 to do at least core samples of the multi-purpose floor in the commercial building at the fairgounds, hoping to find out why the floor is bubbling up in some areas.
Al Koglin, director for the parks department and the fairgrounds, said the floor was installed about two years ago.
“We’ve had some bubbling of the floor since then,” said Koglin. “At first, we thought it was water.” But now, he said, it appears that it is pulling apart in some areas, and that it could be an insulation issue.

Shifting property values drive tax statement changes

Shifting property values seem to have had more of an impact on individual property taxes than increases in levies, if Thursday night’s McLeod County truth-in-taxation hearing was any indicator.
After a few opening comments by County Board Chair Joe Nagel, County Assessor Sue Schulz explained some of the changes in market valuations, upon which property taxes are, in part, determined.
Schulz said that valuations are based on property sales. In general, the price paid on farm acres is declining, while prices paid for residential housing is going up.
