County looks at grant options for solid waste

McLeod County is looking at buying a refurbished grinder to process ag plastic, contingent on grant funding from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).
The County Board approved purchasing the grinder at a cost of $215,500 from Rotochopper of St. Martin.


Planning commission hears possible new uses for Helen Baker

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School District building project is moving along and the targeted date to move out of Helen Baker Elementary in Glencoe is coming closer.
Assistant Glencoe City Administrator Dan Ehrke told the planning commission of some very preliminary possibilities for the Helen Baker site at the commission’s Thursday, Feb. 9, meeting.
In his presentation, Ehrke informed the commission that the school district has received some preliminary interest from a developer to possibly renovate the building into apartments.


Parents, students want to save boys’ soccer program

Over 35 concerned parents and students attended the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School Board meeting Monday, Feb. 13, to show support for the boys’ soccer program.
GSL Activity Director Dean Schwirtz met with parents and students Feb. 6 to express safety concerns about the future of the boys’ program.
The program has struggled in recent years. Numbers have declined drastically from 38 participants in 2011 to 19 in 2016.

GSL Mock Trial continues to draw new participants

Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Mock Trial program has grown to include a junior varsity team for the first time this year.
The eight new Mock Trial participants have a variety of reasons for joining the program.
“I’ve had people tell me how much fun it is,” said Dusty Wendinger, a sophomore. Natalie Orocio, a freshman, said she is looking to be an attorney as a career, and finds the experience helpful.
