Martha B. Wilkins, 91, of Silver Lake

Martha Blanche (Madlo) Wilkins, 91, of Silver Lake, died Jan. 29, 2017.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 4, at Faith Presbyterian Church in Silver Lake with the Rev. Carol Chmielewski officiating. Jacki Rossi was the organist.
Casket bearers were six Legionnaires from Silver Lake American Legion Post 141. Interment was in the Faith Presbyterian Cemetery.

 Press has important role in democracy

Editor’s note: U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar addressed members of the Minnesota Newspapers Association at their convention Thursday, Jan. 26. In her remarks, she spoke about preserving our democracy and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of the press and free and fair elections. Klobuchar, the daughter of former Star Tribune reporter Jim Klobuchar, has been a leading voice on freedom of the press. She said the press cannot “keep its mouth shut,” as a White House official suggested.

Orthopedic surgeon joins GRHS medical personnel

Orthopedic surgeon Patrick Hurley, doctor of orthopedics (OD), recently joined the medical staff at Glencoe Regional Health Services (GRHS).
Dr. Hurley provides surgical care for bones, muscles, ligaments and joints that have been affected by injury due to trauma or overuse, or chronic conditions such as arthritis. He sees patients in the Glencoe clinic on Tuesdays and performs surgeries on Thursdays.
Dr. Hurley began his medical career as a family medicine physician in the U.S. Air Force.

Regnier joins staff of Dunbar Dental

Gwen Regnier, doctor of medicine in dentistry (DMD) has joined the staff of the Dunbar Dental Clinic in Glencoe.
Regnier grew up in Chaska and has family in the Glencoe and Lester Prairie areas. She graduated from Mayer Lutheran High School and currently lives in Carver.

Knowledge Bowlers shine in home meet

Once a year, Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) hosts a Knowledge Bowl meet. On Saturday, Feb. 4, GSL hosted 18 schools, including ACGC, Benson, BOLD, CMCS, Community Christian (Willmar), Dawson-Boyd, Hutch-inson, Lester Prairie, Litchfield, MACCRAY, Montevideo, Westonka, New London-Spicer, New Prague, Renville County West, Waconia, Willmar and Yellow Medicine East.

City orders plans, sets bid opening on project

The Glencoe City Council took the next step Monday night on the  proposed 2017 Baxter Avenue street improvement project, approving plans and specifications and setting a bid opening for March 9.
The resolution was passed on a 4-1 vote with Council Member Allan Robeck casting the decenting vote.
Justin Black from Short Elliott Hendrickson, Inc., (SEH) told the council that it is requiring contractors to bid the project in phases to help alleviate the disruption. A new phase will not be started until the previous one is complete.

County leaves assessing fee at same rate on split vote

McLeod County will not be lowering the cost it charges for assessing property for taxing purposes in 2017.
A motion at Tuesday’s McLeod County Board meeting to lower the cost to $8.50 per parcel from the current charge of $10.50 per parcel failed on a 3-2 vote.
The lowering of— or even eliminating — the fee has been a topic for several months, mostly recently at a county board workshop.

GSL students qualify for state BPA competition March 23-25

The Glencoe-Silver Lake Chapter of Business Professionals of America competed in Region 1 individual and team events on Jan. 21.
The following students advanced on to state competition, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Minneapolis.
• Madilynn Anderson, second in Advanced Spreadsheet Applications;
• Mackenzie Davis, third in Administrative Support Research Project;
• Jacob Fehrenbach, second in Database Applications, and third in Accounting Mathematics Concepts;
