Glencoe Light & Power proposes rate changes to begin on April 1

Glencoe Light and Power Commission recently conducted an electric rate study, and Director Dave Meyer presented the results and proposed changes to the Glencoe City Council on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
Meyer explained that the commission is proposing a 1 percent power rate decrease in 2017 with no proposed changes in 2018 and 2019. The power cost adjustment will also decrease from $.0344 to $.0094, providing the largest impact on residential billing.

Finance committee discusses TIF, Sunday liquor sales

Tax increment financing (TIF) is a tool available for governmental bodies and has the ability to capture and redirect new property taxes paid by new private development to promote development, which may not have occurred without the assistance.
With a couple of possible redevelopment opportunities and new council members, the Glencoe City Council reviewed the process at its finance committee meeting Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Students not getting full history of USA, Republicans hear at county convention

American schools are doing their students a disservice by ignoring certain aspects of U.S. history, Janet Beihoffer told those gathered for the annual McLeod County Republicans convention Saturday morning. The convention was held at the Silver Lake Auditorium.
Beihoffer, who is the Minnesota Republican National Committee chairwoman, has roots in education. She currently is an adjunct professor at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul.
“Our students are not getting information on the founding of our country,” said Beihoffer.
