Medical examiner’s report: 9 suicides, 1 motor-vehicle-related death in 2016

There were nine deaths by suicide in 2016, according to the annual medical examiner report.
Dr. A. Quinn Strobl of the Midwest Examiners Office said that was the highest number of suicides in McLeod County that she has seen. She gave her report to the McLeod County Board of Commissioners Tuesday morning.
There were four suicides in 2015, and four in 2014, Strobl said.


Judge Savre to retire from bench March 31

First District Judge Michael Savre is retiring at the end of March after 13 years on the bench. He primarily handled McLeod County cases where he is chambered, but also presided over matters in every one of the seven counties that make up the state’s First Judicial District: Dakota County, Scott County, Carver County, Goodhue County, LeSueur County, Sibley County and McLeod County.


City orders plans, specs for storm water project

The Glencoe City Council took the next step in the proposed 2018 Central Corridor Storm Sewer project at its Monday meeting.
The council approved a resolution authorizing the preparation of plans and specifications for the project.
The proposed project will increase pipe sizes, outlets and storage capacity to greatly improve the drainage within the city during rain events.
Upgrades to some streets and underground utilities also will be made as part of the project.


Baxter Avenue bids under engineer’s estimate

The bids for the city of Glencoe’s Baxter Avenue street and utility reconstruction project came in nearly $600,000 lower than expected, the City Council learned at its Monday meeting.
The nine sealed bids were opened March 9. Bids  ranged from $3.9 million to $4.775 million for the total proposed project. The city has asked for bids for the base project and an alternate plan that would include a portion of Elliot Avenue.
The orignal construction costs were estimated at $4.5 million with a total cost of nearly $5.5 million.


Trailblazer Board meets, holds mediation workshop

The Trailblazer Transit Joint Powers Board elected its 2017 officers at its first formal meeting of 2017 on Thursday, March 16. The board held a workshop following the board meeting.
The board elected Sibley County Commissioner Jim Swanson as chair, McLeod County Commissioner Joe Nagel as vice chair and Buffalo City Council Member Scott Enter as recorder. Enter represents the Wright County Area Transit (WCAT) coalition on the Trailblazer board.
After last year’s general election, the joint powers board has some new members.


County Board sets economic vitality meeting

McLeod County is looking to bring together county, city school and township officials, businesses, as well as “county shareholders” on April 20 to discuss the economic vitality of McLeod County.
The County Board on Tuesday agreed to host an economic summit Thursday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m., to pull all those people into one room — most likely at the Glencoe-Silver Lake High School.
