Big Little Expo set March 18 in Hutch

The Big Little Hunting & Fishing Expo will be held Saturday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in the Commercial Building at the McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. This is an event for the entire family.
Outdoor-related booths will fill the building. Kids will enjoy such things as: fishing for prizes, a live trout pond, minnow races, hands-on fly-tying, bow shooting, and much more.

Christopher Sonju named ’17 Administrator of Excellence

The Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) has named Christopher Sonju, superintendent at Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Public Schools, as a 2017 Administrator of Excellence.
Sonju received this award in recognition of his leadership, concern for students, and active involvement in professional and community affairs. He will be honored at a statewide recognition ceremony during the MASA/MASE Spring Conference, March 9-10, at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest in Brooklyn Park.

Teens injured in rollover near Bird Island Friday

Two teens were injured Friday in a one-vehicle rollover just south of Bird Island.
The Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a report of the accident at 12:16 p.m. The crash occurred on 400th Street, about one mile south of Highway 212, south of Bird Island.

Lila L. Jaskowiak, 86, of Lester Prairie

Lila Lena (Stuedemann) Jaskowiak, 86, of Lester Prairie, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 2, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Daniel Welch officiating. Dawn Wolter was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “Abide With Me” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Manufacturers Alliance recognizes MITGI

Midwest Industrial Tool Grinding, Inc., (MITGI) of Hutchinson has been named Manufacturer of the Year (small company category) by the Manufacturers Alliance, a Minnesota association that promotes education and peer-to-peer mentoring in the Minnesota manufacturing industry. MITGI was selected for efforts to help promote manufacturing through articles, work with schools, business partnerships, tours, presentations and industry outreach.

Named to U of M dean’s list


Several area students were named to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities dean’s list for the 2016 fall semester, including, from Brownton: Alexander Weckham, senior, college of science and engineering; Plato: Kali Trukki, senior, medical school; Silver Lake: Zachery Jones, junior, Carlson School of Management, Mathew Mickolichek, senior, college of science and engineering, and Ivy Nunvar, sophomore, college of food, agriculture and natural resources science; and, from Stewart: Lauren Schulze, sophomore, of college of liberal arts.
 

Son born to LaMott family

Brady and Sarah LaMott of St. Bonifacius announce the arrival of a son, Camden Steven LaMott, born Feb. 26, 2017, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. Camden weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 19 inches in length at birth. He joins a brother, Riley. Grandparents are Steve and Sue Plath of Hutchinson and Bruce and Carrie LaMott of Silver Lake. Great-grandparents are Eunice Lueck of LeSueur, Ed and Dorothy LaMott of Silver Lake and Diane Fritz of Randall.
 

30th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade set March 17

Silver Lake’s 30th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade and Irish party are set for Friday, March 17, at 5:30 p.m.
All Irish and “Irish in heart” are welcome to be in the parade. There are no forms to fill out and no one to call – just get out the green and be at the parade around 5 p.m. to line up.

Bettcher, Gepson chosen for MBDA honor bands

On April 22-23, two Glencoe-Silver Lake band students representing the seventh-grade and concert bands will be members of the 2017 Minnesota Band Directors Association (MBDA) state level honor bands held at Chanhassen High School. Students are selected to the band through a competitive recorded audition that was submitted this past December. This is the fifth consecutive year that GSL will be represented at the state level.

Gepson, Popelka perform with MMEA all-state band

Two Glencoe-Silver Lake Concert Band members have completed their commitment to the 2016-2017 Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) All-State Symphonic Band.
