Panthers fall to Hutch in baseball opener

After several dandy spring days came and went without a ballgame, the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team opened the 2017 season on a sunny afternoon against Hutchinson on Friday, April 7 at Vollmer Field.

New-look GSL softball hits the field this spring

It’s a whole new look for the Glencoe-Silver Lake softball team this spring. After mass graduations following last year’s loss to Holy Family in the opening round of sectional play, there are abundant opportunities this season for those that have worked their way up through the ranks.

Dairy Association hosts banquet, coronation

The McLeod County Dairy Association’s 64th spring banquet and dairy princess coronation was held April 2  at the Glencoe City Center.
The new 2017-2018 McLeod County Dairy Princess is Sierra Swanson, daughter of David and Kari Swanson of Hutchinson.
Swanson can attend the May training seminar to compete to become a Princess Kay finalist. The training seminar and Princess Kay candidate selection is May 19-21 at St. Benedict College, St Joseph.

RS Fiber to begin work in Brownton

The city of Brownton should finally see the installation of the RS Fiber network this summer, the City Council heard at its April 4 meeting.
Toby Brummer of RS Fiber said work on the fiber-to-the-home network should begin in June or July. The fiber network will offer phone, television and internet service to customers.
At some point during the construction, probably closer to fall, RS Fiber will host an open house to present information regarding the services to customers.

Silver Lake City Council considers future capital improvement projects

The Silver Lake City Council took a look at and began to prioritize its capital improvement needs for the next couple of years at its quarterly meeting Monday, April 3.
On the list of projects are storm water, city hall, emergency services and fire hall, water tower, water treatment, lift station and forcemain, and sanitary sewer improvements.
Also on the list are trail construction and crossings, downtown redevelopment and a Highway 7 corridor study.
Representatives from Short Elliot Hendrickson, Inc., (SEH) were at the meeting to assist with the process.

Watertown couple injured in 2-vehicle accident Friday

A Watertown couple were injured in a two-vehicle crash at the Highway 22-Highway 7 split west of Hutchinson Friday at about 8 p.m.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2008 BMW, driven by Jill Kathleen Swing, 55, of Watertown, was southbound on Highway 22, and a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Eric Joseph Greenlee, 25, of Welch, was westbound on Highway 7, when the BMW entered the intersection and the two vehicles collided.

GSL musicians shine at state-section

On April 1, 100 members of the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) High School bands and choirs participated in the state-section solo/ensemble contest at Minnesota State University – Mankato. This contest is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League and allows students to perform instrumental and vocal solos and small ensembles before a certified adjudicator.  
GSL band events were awarded the “Best in Site” awards for all four sites in which they had entries.
