6th annual Mileka’s Run draws 242 runners

Highway 22 detour to end today

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) announced this morning that the detour on Highway 22 near Glencoe should be removed by noon today, and traffic in that area can resume.

The detour was put in place as part of the city of Glencoe's street and utility improvement project.

Inducted into Phi Theta Kappa

Devin Fleck and Leah Peterson, both of Glencoe, and Emily Hackbarth of Silver Lake, were among students named to Phi Theta Kappa at Ridgewater College. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges and recognizes students for their academic achievements as well as leadership, service and scholarship.
 

Barott receives scholarship


South Dakota State University recently announced that Kirsten Barott of Glencoe will receive the Wayne and Jacquie Anderson Scholarship for the upcoming academic year. Barott, a graduate of Glencoe-Silver Lake High School, will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education, communication and leadership.
 

Sibley County historical group sets meetings, museum hours

The Sibley County Historical Society is resuming its meetings every fourth Tuesday of the month through October.
The society will meet Tuesday, May 23, at 7 p.m., in the Henderson City Library meeting room. The topic is “Crazy Quilts” with guest speaker Sandi Andersen. Andersen is an avid quilter who also hosts classes on making quilts and other craft items. She will speak on the history of quilts and their designs.

Elda S. Lombardo, 93, Connecticut

Elda Anna (Spaude) Lombardo, 93, of Connecticut, died peacefully at St. Francis Hospital on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, after a brief illness.
She was the widow of Donato C. Lombardo, who died in 1963.
She was born in Brownton on March 14, 1923, to the late Albert and Alma (Schuette) Spaude. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Elrick and Muriel Spaude and Marvin and Grace Spaude; and son-in-law, Jerry Olson.

Alma F. Ogitzak, 91, of Silver Lake

Alma F. Ogitzak, 91, of Silver Lake, died May 11, 2017, at Cedar Crest in Silver Lake.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, May 15, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake with the Rev. Paul Schumacher presiding. Hannah Stifter and Dylan Lhotka were the readers. Bruce Gatz was the vocalist, and Alice Nowak was the organist. Mrs. Ogitzak’s grandchildren were the gift bearers.

Donald Roy Trettin, 79, of Hutchinson

Donald Roy Trettin, 79, of Hutchinson, formerly of Buffalo Lake, died Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 11, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart with the Rev. Mahlon Bekedam officiating. Bev Wangerin was the organist. Soloist Randy Zieman sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” Congregational hymns were “On Eagle’s Wings” and “Day By Day.”

Edward A. Fasching, 90, of Winsted

Edward Andrew Fasching, 90, of Winsted, died Sunday, May 7, 2017, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, May 11, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted with the Revs. Paul Schumacher and Mark Mallak (a nephew) officiating.
Casket bearers were Neil Wolford, Kerri Fasching, Jacob Paurus, Brad Danielson, Eddie Sautel, Joshua Fasching and Cassie Sherman. Interment was in the Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Auxiliary seeks cancelled stamps

Silver Lake American Legion Auxiliary Unit 141 is saving used (cancelled) postage stamps as one of its programs.
Please leave a quarter-inch border around the stamp if possible so the stamp doesn’t get damaged. A quick way to do this is to tear off the corner of the envelope with the stamp on it. Machine-metered postmarks are not being collected.
