Time for the School Board to do its job

Reading last week’s Chronicle account of the Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board meeting sparked flashbacks. The School Board was discussing program and staff cuts … again.
Over 15 years ago, the GSL Board went through tumultuous times in trying to extricate itself from statutory operating debt (SOD) and was faced with agonizing budget cuts. The School Board hemmed and hawed back then, and the problems only got worse.

The Glencoe City Council declined to expand the hours of the yard waste disposal site on a 2-3 vote Monday night.
The city’s personnel committee discussed the issue in length at its May 8 meeting, and recommended the hours be expanded with limited staffing.
City Administrator Mark Larson said that the hours of the site was a council decision.

Finishing work being done on interior, exterior of jail

McLeod County’s jail expansion and courthouse project appears to be in the finishing stages, the County Board heard Tuesday morning.
Sam Lauer of Contegrity, the project management company, said that painting is being done in the interior while outside, the brick facing is being put on the new addition.
Lauer said the exterior brick is being started on the east side. When that is finished, masons will move to the south side “and they work their way around” the rest of the building.

Planning commission tables permit request for twin homes addition

The city of Glencoe’s Planning Commission on May 11 tabled a special use permit request by Glencoe Progressive Partners to build twin homes along 20th Street West in Glencoe.
Last month, the Planning Commission voted against recommending the approval of the special use permit after several neighbors voiced concerns about potential property value declines and splitting utilities.
The Glencoe City Council asked the developer for more information and asked the planning commission to reconsider.
