Blue Jays nip mini-skid in the bud

The Plato Blue Jays nipped their second two-game losing streak of the season square in the bud by claiming a pair of weekend wins.

After coming up on the short end of a 4-1 loss at Watertown on Wednesday, June 21 – a loss that dropped Plato to 7-6 overall on the season – the Blue Jays fought back to win 3-0 at Carver on Saturday, June 24, before rallying for a 4-3 home win over Young America the next evening.

Busy week for Post 641

The Plato American Legion Post 641 baseball team saw their share of the ballpark over the last week, with six games jammed into a six-day stretch from Wednesday, June 21, through Monday, June 26.

Plato began the run by suffering its first loss of the season in a 9-0 setback against visiting Watertown. Spencer Lepel logged Plato’s lone hit of the game in the shutout loss.

As quiet as Post 641’s bats were against Watertown, they exploded against St. Peter in the opening game of the Andyman Tournament in Young America on Friday, June 23.

Brewers win at Glencoe Days

Brody Bratsch’s two-out RBI single plated Travis Rothstein with the winning run as the Glencoe Brewers rallied to defeat visiting Brownton 3-2 as the teams matched up at Glencoe Days on Friday, June 23.

The two teams were locked in a scoreless pitcher’s duel through five innings before Brownton broke through with two runs in the top of the sixth against Glencoe starter Jaime Paumen.

Bruins searching for a win

These have been difficult days for the Brownton Bruins, as the squad enters this week on a four-game losing skid.

The Bruins opened their unhappy streak with a 20-1 loss at Hutchinson on Tuesday, June 20.

Brownton trailed 7-0 after the first inning and only broke the after Grant Baumetz walked and came around to score on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.

Rural Stewart man dies in accident

Larry E. Rath, 70, of rural Stewart, died Tuesday when a Bobcat skid loader he was operating overturned in a ditch about four miles north of Buffalo Lake.

According to the Renville County Sheriff's Office, it received a 9-1-1 call at 5:18 p.m. reporting that a skid loader was on its roof in a ditch in the 52000 block of 840th Avenue in Preston Lake Township, and that the operator was still in the machine.

On Monday, in Ramsey County District Court, Gov. Mark Dayton agreed to 90 days of funding for the Minnesota Legislature so it can hopefully come to a compromise with him on the recently passed budget bills.

How can county afford millions for another trail?

We are fortunate to have cable TV broadcast of the county commissioner meetings. Watching these the last few months has flushed out just how much the proposed new Dakota Rail Trail is going to hit the pocketbooks of McLeod County taxpayers. Folks, it isn’t pretty.

Wild parsnip an issue along the Luce Line Trail

To the Editor:
County trails should not just be built and abandoned. Timely attention is needed to maintain safety. Even though the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has too many paved trails to keep up with, McLeod County does not deserve trails that are unsafe.
