Locals awarded scholarships

Jenny Illg and Garret Ober of Glencoe have received  scholarships from the BSU Alumni & Foundation at Bemidji State University. Illg, who is pursuing a nursing degree, received the Bertha Evenson Memorial Fund Scholarship and Ober, who is majoring in aquatic biology, received the Robert Kramer Scholarship.

Victoria Burr graduates

Victoria Burr of Glencoe graduated this spring from Bethel Univeristy in St. Paul with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work. She is the daughter of Bryan and Stacie Burr.

Girl born to Hutchinson couple

Jessica and Robert Struthers announce the birth of a daughter, Jemma Jayde Struthers, who arrived July 11, 2017, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Jemma weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 20 inches long. She is welcomed by grandparents Joseph Miscavage of Hutchinson, Pam Morovits of Silver Lake and Greg Struthers and Tammy Bartlett of Hudson, Wisconsin, and siblings, Talan, Ryker, Hailey, Jaden and Katrina Struthers.

County 4-H’ers show off fashion, performing, demonstration talents

Competition was fierce at the 2017 McLeod County 4-H Fashion Revue, Performing Arts and Demonstration Day, which was held Wednesday, July 12, at Harmony River Living Center.

Jennifer Lynn Horstmann, 41, formerly of Silver Lake, died Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Hutchinson Health. At the time of her death, she was residing at Prairie Senior Cottages in Hutchinson.

Repeal and replace isn’t the answer

Republicans in the U.S. Senate haven’t learned much from the experiences of their counterparts in the House of Representatives.
GOP senators are working to create a new “repeal-and-replace” health care bill that would scrap the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, and supposedly replace it with something better.
As we well recall, Republicans in the House scrapped a planned bill of its own when they realized they simply could not round up enough votes to get the measure passed. No bill, they reasoned, was better than a failed bill.

 Restoring faith in America’s democracy

There’s no shortage of threats to our democracy. Russian meddling in elections, the vulnerability of state voting systems to hacking, politicians’ assaults on the media, and political leaders’ growing fondness for policy-making in secret — all of these pose a real challenge to our system’s viability.
As worrisome as these are, there’s one problem that may be the greatest threat of all: Americans’ loss of faith in politics and democratic institutions.

Messner elected to serve on state Judicial Council

Karen Messner, court administrator for Sibley and McLeod counties, was recently nominated and elected by her peers to serve on the Minnesota Judicial Council as the court administrator representative.  

GSL grad loses life in cycle accident

A Mayer man, Justin John Nowak, 26, was killed late Tuesday afternoon, July 17, when his motorcycle collided head-on with a semi on Highway 7 near Vale Avenue in Acoma Township near Hutchinson. The accident was reported at about 5:15 p.m.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Nowak was westbound on Highway 7 on a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle when he crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound 2016 Freightliner driven by Daniel Dan McBride, 55, of Watertown, South Dakota.

Bicyclist injured in crash; air ambulance grounded

A Hartland man was injured Tuesday, July 18, at about 7 p.m., when the bicycle he was riding crossed a centerline and hit an oncoming sport utility vehicle in Sibley County.
According to the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office, 28-year-old Mitchell Brekke of Hartland was riding with a group of about eight Mankato-area bicyclists on Sibley County Highway 20 about one-fourth mile south of Sibley County Highway 8 when he lost control and entered the northbound lane, and struck a 2008 Saturn Vue driven by Claudia Flores, 63, of Le Sueur.
