Reinhardt Theodore Goerke Sr., 90, of Buffalo, died peacefully, surrounded with family by his side, on Sunday, June 25, 2017.
The funeral service was held Saturday, July 1, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Ryan Clark officiating.
Casket bearers were Amber Harmon, Patrick Harmon, Alex Goerke, Amara Ave-Lallemant, Kayla Goerke and Alena Ave-Lallemant. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery.

Should county have uniform mining rules?

At last Wednesday’s meeting of the McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission, the question was raised as to why some conditions — such as hours of operation and reclamation timeframes — can vary on gravel mining pits in the same area.
Acoma Township officials noted that conditions for two requested mining permit renewals were less restrictive than those placed on another pit at earlier hearings. The three pits are within a short distance of each other.

Figures regarding trail maintenance disputed

To the Editor:
As an avid bicyclist, local elected official, member of the county trail committee, and county taxpayer, I am in tune to the discussions that have taken place regarding development of the Dakota Rail Trail in McLeod County.
Unfortunately, a lot of misinformation has been disseminated to try to derail this effort. A recent letter to the editor in The Chronicle (“How can county afford millions for another trail?”) is the latest example. Basically, everything regarding the project in this letter is wrong.

Back when I was in Congress, I got a call from a constituent one day. I’d recently voted to raise the nation’s debt ceiling, and the man was more than irate. “Don’t you understand that we’ve got a serious spending and debt problem in this country?” he asked. “Why did you cast this idiotic vote?”

Grilling hot dogs and corn on the cob, marching in parades, staying up late to watch fireworks light up the night sky — the Fourth of July always reminds us how united we are. We are united in independence. We are united in freedom. We are united in patriotism, our unwavering love of this nation and the people in it.
That’s something to celebrate, even if sometimes it’s easy to forget – with all the partisanship and division we see in this nation we love.
