Plato ski-daddled out of state tournament

It was one and done for the Plato Blue Jays in this year’s state Class C tournament, as five errors doomed the Region 7 champions in a 5-0 loss to 2016 state runner-up Sobieski on Saturday, Aug. 26, at Irish Yard in Green Isle.
Plato made an early exit from the state field as the Skis made an error-aided second-inning tally stand up before adding four more runs – all helped across by Blue Jay miscues – in the contest.
Sobieski starter Tyler Jendro kept the Blue Jays off-balance at the plate early as Plato struggled to put baserunners aboard for through the initial frames.

Girls' soccer rallies to top Mayer Lutheran

After suffering a pair of tough losses to begin the season, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team put together an impressive performance to win 3-2 at Mayer Lutheran on Monday, Aug. 28, and claim victory No. 1 on the young season.
The Panthers trailed 2-0 early on the thick, damp turf at Mayer, but gained in confidence through the first half after putting several good chances on the Crusaders’ net.

Netters top Sibley East

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team has its season in full swing already, having claimed one win out of five matches played.
“We’re a work in progress,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “The key word is progress.”
A home invitational meet against Blue Earth, United South Central and Sibley East kicked off the season on Tuesday, Aug. 22. GSL claimed one win on the day, gritting out a 4-3 defeat of Sibley East.
Justine Helmbrecht claimed a straight-sets (6-3, 6-3) win at No. 1 singles, as did Krissy Major (6-4, 6-4) at No. 4.

Spikers top Byron in opener

Heading into a pair of home matches this week, the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team earned a season-opening victory against Byron in a match played at Hopkins High School on Saturday, Aug. 26.
The Panthers took their opener in a back-and-forth five-game match, clinched with a 17-15 victory in the finale.
“What an exciting match, especially hitting over a tall Byron Bears front line of 6-foot-5, 5-11 and 5-10,” coach Lori Schwirtz said.
Byron took the first game 25-19, with GSL rallying to win the next two 25-23 and 25-18 before the Bears forced a tiebreaker with a 25-19 game four win.

Cross-Country teams sweep season opener

The Glencoe-Silver Lake cross-country teams got their seasons started in earnest in much the same way they did last year, on a damp morning at Baylor Regional Park in the annual “alumni meet.”
It was a successful start to the new year for both the Panther boys’ and girls’ squads as GSL took first place in both competitions.
