County to consider lifting load limit for gravel pit near Glencoe

The McLeod County Planning Commission is recommending that the McLeod County Board of Commissioners lift a truck limit imposed on a gravel mining conditional use permit held by Northern Lines Contracting, which is operating a gravel pit on property owned by Huepenbecker Land Holding Co., LLC, just east of Midwest Machinery along Highway 212.
The Planning Commission had recommended approval of the permit in May, with 15 conditions. At its June 6 meeting, the County Board added a 16th condition — that there be a maximum of 30 round trips in and out of the pit per day.”

Nevertheless, the governor persists

It became a popular battle cry for supporters of women’s rights after Sen. Elizabeth Warren was silenced by the U.S. Senate over her objection to the confirmation of Jeff Sessions as the attorney general — “Nevertheless, she persisted.”
One could re-tool that phrase to accommodate Gov. Mark Dayton’s battle to “defund” the Minnesota Legislature — “Nevertheless, he persisted.”

Nothing says ‘welcome’ like pond scum

Nothing says “Welcome to Glencoe” like a holding pond full of green slime.
That’s what greeted Heat in the Street attendees recently at the Glencoe City Center. A similar pond greets guests at the east entry into town at Veterans Memorial Park (near Burger King).
It seems all holding ponds are not alike. There are retention ponds that retain water but never drain away. There are ponds that hold water and slowly drain out later. And there are ponds that are dry most of the year until the annual “monsoon rain event” arrives.
We have them all.
