City of Brownton adopts franchise ordinance

The city of Brownton had just a handful of people show up for its public hearing Tuesday, Aug. 22, on whether it should adopt an ordinance allowing RS Fiber to establish a fiber-to-the-home franchise in the city.
And that handful of people was more concerned about the services that would be offered, and the timetable for completing the project.
RS Fiber is a cooperative between Renville and Sibley counties and several cities, including Brownton and Stewart, to bring fiber-optic service to residents and businesses in those communities.

Collins Township asks Stewart about shifting sections into Stewart fire district

Collins Township asked the city of Stewart Thursday night if it would consider taking over the sections it has in the Brownton fire district for fire protection.
The city of Stewart and its surrounding townships met jointly Thursday for its annual meeting regarding fire protection. Collins Township already has some sections in the Stewart fire district, and the Lake Marion area is in the Brownton Fire District.

LeRoy Rutske, 91, White Bear Lake

LeRoy Rutske, 91, of White Bear Lake, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, in Arden Hills.
Mr. Rutske was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Glencoe to Harold and Minnie Rutske. He was baptized into the Christian faith on Oct. 19, 1925, and confirmed on March 19, 1940.
On June 2, 1946, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Luehrs, daughter of Ferdinand and Esther Luehrs. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Robert, Thomas, Peter and LeAnn. They shared 71 years of marriage.

Mary Ann Sopkowiak, 66, of Glencoe

Mary Ann (Smoldt) Sopkowiak, 66, of Glencoe, died from cancer Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, at her home, surrounded by friends and family.
Memorial services were held Monday, Aug. 28, at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Katherine Rood officiating. Twyla Kirkeby was the organist. Instrumentalist Tammy Bishop performed “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “If You Could See Me Now.” Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “Softly and Tenderly” and “Because He Lives.”

Faye V.C. Hauer, 98, of Hector

Faye Hauer, Hector, died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at 8:40 a.m., at the Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center at the age of 98 years, 9 months and 25 days.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 2, at 11 a.m., at the Hughes-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Hector with the Rev. David Drager officiating. Music will be provided by soloist Amy Hollan with accompanist Cyndi Washburn, also by granddaughter Jennie Herning and her daughters, Mercedes, Alexis and Shelby, and Jeff Danielson.

Cyrus ‘Cy’ Loncorich, 56, of Brownton

Cyrus “Cy” Loncorich, 56, of Brownton, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, at his home.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 26, at Grace Lutheran Church in Brownton with the Rev. Andy Hermodson-Olsen officiating. Vicki Herrmann was the organist.
Casket bearers were Matt Loncorich, Hadeon Loncorich, Corbin Loncorich, Bob Lindeman, Tom Bebo and Mark Schuette. Honorary casket bearers were his grandchildren, and nieces Haylee and Rachel Loncorich. Interment will be at a later date in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Brownton.

Rebecca C. Boltmann, 69, of Glencoe

Rebecca “Becky” Coralene (Humerickhouse) Boltmann, 69, of Glencoe, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Zion Lutheran Church, Benton Township, rural Cologne, with the Rev. Eric Zacharius officiating. Julianne Marcisak was the organist. Special music was Brad Paisley’s “In the Garden.” Congregational hymns were “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” and “Abide With Me.”

Teen allegedly steals tractor near New Auburn

A New Auburn teen was arrested Thursday, Aug. 24, after allegedly stealing a tractor.
According to the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office, a report was received Aug. 24 at about 8:45 p.m. of a John Deere 9400 tractor that was stolen just west of the city of New Auburn.
Deputies found the tractor in the city of New Auburn and attempted a traffic stop. The tractor eventually stopped, and the operator, Dakota Diaz Jacobson, 18, of New Auburn, was placed under arrest. Charges of felony theft are pending.

Inmate briefly escapes from Sibley jail

A man who attempted to escape custody Wednesday, Aug. 23, at about 8:45 p.m., was immediately apprehended, according to the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office.
