Inspector wants to educate public on city of Glencoe’s rental ordinance

There may be some misconceptions about the city of Glencoe’s rental ordinance, and inspector Bob Scheidt would like to clear them up.
Most people typically think of rental property as apartment complexes. What many don’t realize is that privately owned homes that are rented to others also are considered rental property — and there are certain codes and standards that must be met.
“People may inherit a house or decide to buy a house and rent it out, but just don’t realize what all is involved,” said Scheidt, a former fire chief who also is the city’s fire marshal.

County wants to get ahead of wild parsnip spread

McLeod County officials want to get ahead of the game on the spread of wild parsnip in the county.
Karen Johnson, Extension educator, and Al Koglin, the county parks supervisor and weed inspector, asked the County Board at its Aug. 8 meeting for a workshop to come up with a plan to address the issue.
Koglin said that last year, a few small clusters of the weed were found around the county.
“It seems this year, it just exploded in McLeod County,” said Koglin.

Silver Lake couple wins award in car show

Brian and Julie Stibal of Silver Lake participated in the 10,000 Lakes Concours d’Elegance car show in Excelsior on Sunday, July 30 with their 1956 Oldsmobile Holiday Super 88 Sedan Deluxe.
The couple won a preservation award for the car, given to honor beautifully unrestored, original vehicles.
The Stibals were first-time participants in the car show.
“We’re more used to the mom-and-pop, very informal kind of car show,” said Brian Stibal.

John Hendricks, 90, Cumberland, Wis.

John William Hendricks, 90, of Cumberland, Wisconsin, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 9, after a short illness.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the First United Methodist Church in Cumberland, Wisconsin.

Wallace B. Plath, 75, of Hutchinson

Wallace “Wally” Plath, 75, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 11, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson with the Rev. Gerhard Bode officiating. Paul Otte was the organist. Soloist Chuck Thiel performed “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” and “How Great Thou Art.” Congregational hymns were “Just As I Am” and “Abide With Me.”
Casket bearers were Dexter Klitzke, Donald Schroeder, Richard “Dick” White, David Kohls, Kevin Reinitz and Charlie Reiner. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson.

Vanna J. Knacke, 68, of New Auburn

Vanna Jean (Sprengeler) Knacke, 68, of New Auburn, wife of Kraig Knacke, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord.
The funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 14, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Auburn with the Rev. Bradley “Brad” Danielson officiating. Kara Scholla was the organist and pianist. Soloist Kristen Hansch sang “Over the Rainbow.” Congregational hymns were “Just a Closer Walk With Me” and “Softly and Tenderly.”

Committee recommends denial of variance

On Monday afternoon, the city of Glencoe’s Personnel and Legislative Committee chose to uphold the planning commission’s recommendation to deny Jerry Scharpe’s request for variance on his garage’s vertical metal siding.
Scharpe and his wife were present at the meeting.
The situation was originally brought before the Glencoe Planning Commission on July 13. It was then sent to the July 17 City Council meeting where it was voted to bring it to the Personnel and Legislative Committee in order to further investigate the laws, ordinances and state codes involved in the situation.
