Cross-country teams place third and sixth at NYA Invite

The Glencoe-Silver Lake cross-country running teams returned to a familiar course at Baylor Regional Park for the Norwood Young America Lions Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Both the Panther squads finished high in their respective five-kilometer runs, with the GSL girls taking third out of 13 teams and the boys placing sixth out of 18 clubs.
Maddie Lemke led the Panther girls by placing 17th in the girls’ race with a time of 21 minutes, 44.6 seconds.
Malayh Metcalf took 18th in a time of 21.51.1, with Ellie Schmidt close behind in 21st with a run of 21:56.8.

Panthers fall to Tigers, 21-9

Points were hard to come by for the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team in its home opener against Delano on Friday, Sept. 15.
The Panthers took an early lead, but were entirely stifled after halftime as the Tigers rallied for a 21-9 victory at Stevens Seminary Stadium.
There was a promising start to a warm evening as Delano botched its first punt of the game to set the hosts up at the Tiger 4-yard line.
Before three minutes had elapsed in the contest, GSL was into the end zone as sophomore running back Will Higgins recorded his first varsity touchdown on a one-yard dash.

Tennis nets a victory

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team earned its second win of the year, and first since the opening day of the season, with a 5-2 defeat of Southwest Christian at the Hutchinson Invitational on Friday, Sept. 15.
“It was good to get a win there,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “Probably could’ve won it 6-1, but it was good for the girls to get a win.”
The Panthers took three of four singles matches, with Justine Helmbrecht winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, Katie Doolittle winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Krissy Major winning 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4.

Panther spikers drop two to begin road trip

Losses at Mayer Lutheran as well as Annandale last week dropped the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team two matches below .500 on the season.
The Panthers, in the midst of a five-date road trip, narrowly came up on the short end against the Cardinals, losing three of four games by a total of six points.
GSL dropped the first two games 25-23, 26-24, before winning the third game 25-21. However, the Cardinals gritted out the fourth and deciding game 26-24 to take the evening’s victory.
