County planning commission considers permit for outdoor venue near Brownton

McLeod County may soon have another outdoor venue for weddings and other ceremonies.
At its Wednesday, March 22, meeting, the McLeod County Planning Advisory Committee heard a conditional use permit request from Tom and Sheila Hagel, who live north of Brownton in Sumter Township, to utilize an existing structure on their property and other property for outdoor occasions. The property is located at 17488 100th Street, Brownton.
While the committee voted unanimously to recommend approval of the permit to the county board, there were concerns.

Tim Orth Jamboree set for Saturday

Each year, the Tim Orth Foundation hosts an annual basketball jamboree at the Glencoe-Silver Lake High School gymnasium.
The event brings together some of the best high school basketball players in the area for two games, one featuring girls and one featuring boys.

Firefighters face increased cancer risk

Greg Doeden joined the Moorhead Fire Department in 1983 because he wanted to help people. Thirty-four years later, he’s still working — day and night — to keep the city safe. Across the state, firefighters like Greg demonstrate heroism every day. They endure physically and mentally grueling conditions. They have to be able to lift 175 pounds while wearing a full suit of protective gear. They climb ladders and break through doors, windows, and walls all while people’s lives literally depend on them.

 The problem with too much information

Many sources of information today cater to a narrow political view, making no pretense of objectivity. Their goal is to incite, not inform. What’s needed is a common base of knowledge we can use to forge agreement.
The job of being a citizen — and being a member of Congress — has gotten much harder of late. As sources of information proliferate and “news” not actually grounded in fact grows common on social media, Americans have to work to sort reality from fiction and insight from disinformation.

Chase suspect drives into lake, flees on foot

Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson reports that on March 26, at about 11:30 pm, a sheriff’s deputy observed an occupied, idling vehicle parked outside a business in Norwood Young America (NYA). The deputy ran the vehicle’s registration and other records checks, and learned the driver’s license was revoked.

Gary Lee Bruesehoff, 70, of Victoria

Gary Lee Bruesehoff, 70, of Bethesda Lutheran Communities in Victoria, formerly of rural Norwood Young America, died Monday, March 20, 2017, at Golden Valley Rehab & Care Center in Golden Valley.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 25, at Zion Lutheran Church in Benton Township, Cologne, with the Rev. Eric Zacharius officiating. Julianne Marcisak was the organist. Congregational hymns were “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “Jesus Loves the Little Children” and “Let Me Be Thine Forever.”

Dorothy E. LaMott, 88, of Silver Lake

Dorothy Emma LaMott, 88, of Silver Lake, died Monday, March 20, 2017, at Cedar Crest in Silver Lake.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 25, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Hormann officiating. Bruce Gatz was the vocalist and Sheryl Menden was the organist.
Casket bearers were her grandchildren, Jeff, Jason, Derrick and Devin Chrast, Angie and Blake Trnka, Brandon and Aaron Thiemann and Brady and Tyler LaMott.
Interment was in the Holy Family Cemetery in Silver Lake.

Raymond R. Mrkvicka, 93, of Cosmos

Raymond Richard Mrkvicka, 93, of Cosmos, formerly of Silver Lake, died Friday, March 24, 2017, at Cedar Crest of Cosmos.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, March 30, at 11 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake, with the Rev. Paul Schumacher as the celebrant. Visitation will be Thursday, March 30, for one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Interment will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Leonard George Pikal, 94, of Glencoe

Leonard George Pikal, 94, of Glencoe, formerly of Brownton, died Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care in Glencoe.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 27, at the Dobratz-Hantge Chapel in Hutchinson with the Rev. R. Allan Reed officiating. Dawn Wolter was the organist. Congregational hymns were  “Just As I Am,” “Amazing Grace” and “In the Garden.”

Brian Wayne Schwarze, 53, Brownton

Brian Wayne Schwarze, 53, of Brownton, died Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Divine Home Care in Hutchinson.
He was born June 24, 1963, at the Hutchinson hospital. He was the son of Wayne nad Gerrie Schwarze. He was confirmed in Glencoe and graduated from Glencoe High School in 1981.
