Cutting wages does not help communities build

To the Editor:
We live in a consumer-based economy, which means our economy is stronger when folks have money to spend on goods and services. Yet state Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen wants to take away middle-class purchasing power from blue-collar construction workers by diminishing prevailing wages.

Meals on Wheels seeking volunteer drivers

To the Editor:
Are you looking for a meaningful volunteer experience?
Lutheran Social Services (LSS) Senior Dining and Meals on Wheels in Glencoe is grateful for the wonderful volunteers who deliver meals to Glencoe’s homebound older adults. However, we are currently in great need of additional Meals on Wheels volunteers. We are located at the Millie Beneke Manor in Glencoe, and operate our meal programs daily, Monday through Friday. Volunteer drivers/deliverers pick up meals between 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., and delivery takes one hour or less.

Wally Pikal, musical icon, dies at age 90

Wally Pikal, 90, an area musician famous for being able to play two and more trumpets at a time — while jumping on a pogo stick — died Thursday, March 2, at Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
Pikal graduated from Brownton High School in 1944, and one of his earliest influences was high school band instructor Harris Nelson, who could play three trumpets at the same time.

Brownton Cabin Fever mystery dinner, ‘The Luck of the Irish,’ set for March 18

The Brownton Cabin Fever Days committee will present an Irish-themed mystery dinner this year, set for Saturday, March 18, the day after St. Patrick’s Day, at the Brownton Community Center.
Along with the annual mystery, which attendees help solve, a smoked pork chop meal will be served by the Brownton Lions Club.
This year’s mystery is “The Luck of the Irish,” and actually involves two mysteries — who stole the King of the Leprechauns’ pot of gold, and who killed the king’s goldsmith.

Public hearing on WWTP plan draws not one person

It was a quiet evening at two public hearings held by the Glencoe City Council Monday.
The council held a public hearing to review the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) facility plan.
Jessica Hedin and Eric Miller of Short Elliott Hendrickson, Inc., (SEH) presented the plan at the hearing.
The plan evaluates the condition and capacity of the current facility, evaluates the needs of the facility over the next 20 years, provides cost options for improvement and provides an environmental review.
A facility plan also is required for funding applications.

County Road 3 reconstruction planned for 2017-18

The reconstruction of a portion of County Road 3, a major east-west artery in the southern third of McLeod County, is on tap for this year and 2018.
John Brunkhorst, McLeod County highway engineer, reviewed the five-year construction plan with the McLeod County Board Tuesday morning. Brunkhorst cautioned that the plan is “not set in stone” and is contingent on funding opportunities.

GSL girls headed back to Mankato

A year after St. Peter eliminated Glencoe-Silver Lake from the Section 2AA girls’ basketball playoffs, the Panthers returned the favor on Friday, March 3, by thumping the Saints 76-53 in the North subsection semifinals at Prior Lake High School.

“It was pretty fun,” coach Jeff Monahan said.

After building a double-digit lead late in the first half, No. 2 seed St. Peter managed to get back into the game on the strength of some hot three-point shooting, though the third-seeded Panthers led 31-24 at the break.

Panthers rally from 19 down to shock, eliminate St. Peter

With the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team having been dominated by visiting St. Peter for more than half of the Section 2AA playoff opener on Monday, March 6, it was clear that it just wasn’t Panthers’ night.

Until it suddenly became clear that it absolutely was their night.
