Locals graduate from SCSU


Courtney Schroepfer and Beau Streu, both of Glencoe, graduated from St. Cloud State University Friday, Dec. 16. Schroepfer graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education. Streu earned an Associate in Arts degree in liberal arts and sciences.

Tichy named to fall dean’s list

Jesse Tichy of Glencoe, a senior at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, has been named to the fall 2016 dean’s list. Tichy is studying nursing at the college of nursing. To be named to the dean’s list, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

Locals on fall Gustavus list


Abigail Butler and Oakley Clark, both of Glencoe, and Jillian Driver of Stewart were all named to the fall semester dean’s list at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. To be named to the list, a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.

Named to Bethel dean’s list


Victoria Burr, daughter of Bryan and Stacie Burr of Glencoe, and Payton Maiers, daughter of Mark and Cindy Maiers of Stewart, were both named ot the dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester at Bethel University in St. Paul. Both are seniors at the university.
 

GRHS hosting medical student

Third-year medical student Jacob Bermudez is gaining rural health care experience at Glencoe Regional Health Services (GRHS) through the University of Minnesota’s Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP).
Bermudez started his training at GRHS on Oct. 10, 2016, and will stay until June 23, 2017. The program allows medical students to work under the guidance of a seasoned family medicine physician while experiencing a variety of medical specialties, observing procedures and developing patient-communication skills.

Julie Rae Zielie-Gaffer, 61, of Mankato

Julie Rae Zielie-Gaffer, 61, of Mankato, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System – Mankato.
A memorial visitation will be held today (Wednesday, Feb. 8), from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Mankato Mortuary, Mankato. Memorials may be given to White Earth Reservation, Nature Conservancy, Family Sharing Tree in the greater Mankato area, or the KMSU Shuffle Function Program.

Martha B. Wilkins, 91, of Silver Lake

Martha Blanche (Madlo) Wilkins, 91, of Silver Lake, died Jan. 29, 2017.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 4, at Faith Presbyterian Church in Silver Lake with the Rev. Carol Chmielewski officiating. Jacki Rossi was the organist.
Casket bearers were six Legionnaires from Silver Lake American Legion Post 141. Interment was in the Faith Presbyterian Cemetery.

 Press has important role in democracy

Editor’s note: U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar addressed members of the Minnesota Newspapers Association at their convention Thursday, Jan. 26. In her remarks, she spoke about preserving our democracy and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of the press and free and fair elections. Klobuchar, the daughter of former Star Tribune reporter Jim Klobuchar, has been a leading voice on freedom of the press. She said the press cannot “keep its mouth shut,” as a White House official suggested.
