2017 state legislative session is off and running

To The Editor,
The 2017 legislative session began Jan. 3. I am looking forward to being chair of the Transportation Finance and Policy Committee and having a hand in crafting policy for our state’s transportation infrastructure. I also will serve on the Capital Investment Committee, the Finance Committee, the Rules and Administration Committee, and the State Government Finance and Policy Committee.

Gruenhagen presents update on new session

To The Editor,
We are back in St. Paul again. Last Tuesday, there was a ceremony where representatives took the oath of office, administered by Chief Justice Lorie Gildea.
I am pleased to say that Kurt Daudt was once again elected Speaker of the House. Speaker Daudt has led our caucus with integrity, and held to our conservative principles for the last four years, both in the minority and majority, against extreme democratic politicians. I look forward to his continued leadership.

GSL Knowledge Bowl teams compete at CMCS, St. Francis

This past weekend, Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Knowledge Bowl teams went two directions. The seventh-and eighth-grade teams went to Central Minnesota Christian School (CMCS) in Prinsburg, while the high school teams went to St. Francis High School for its Rumble on the Rum. (CMCS is a relatively small school in the region, and had asked GSL to send no more than three teams, but GSL has seven to eight teams.)

“We really need to thank everyone who donated and helped,” said Krueger of Minnesota Nice’s record season.

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to replace Commissioner Ron Shimanski as a representative on the Trailblazer Transit Joint Powers Board.
The board took up a motion that had been tabled from its Jan. 3 meeting, in which Commissioner Doug Krueger moved that he and commissioners Joe Nagel and Rich Pohlmeier be appointed to the joint powers board.

County Board approves historical society funding on split vote

On a 3-2 vote Tuesday, the McLeod County Board of Commissioners approved continued funding for a historical community outreach position.
The position actually began last year, and the board had approved about $6,700 to fund the outreach coordinator through the end of 2016, with the stipulation that a “punch list” of items be evaluated before it considered continued funding for the program.
The coordinator position helps communities and historical groups in the county accomplish their historic preservation goals.
