Lee Ostrom, former Chronicle sports editor

(Harold) Lee Ostrom, 66, died Jan. 14, 2018, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.
Ostrom was the sports editor of The McLeod County Chronicle from 2002 to 2013, when he retired because of health issues.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m., at New Journey United Church of Christ in Hutchinson. A private scattering of ashes will be held at a later date.

4 Hutchinson residents hurt in accident

Four Hutchinson residents were injured Tuesday at about 5:40 p.m. in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 7 near McLeod County Road 16 in Silver Lake.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2007 Ford pickup driven by Dustin Plombon, 35, of Hutchinson, was westbound on Highway 7, and a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Richard Arthur Krueger, 75, of Hutchinson, was southbound on County Road 16 when the vehicles collided at the intersection.

Glencoe man taken to hospital after crash

Kraig Charles Kunkel, 46, of Glencoe, was taken by ambulance to the Mayo Clinic Health System emergency room in Mankato after two semis collided on the Third Avenue ramp from Highway 14. Kunkel apparently suffered a medical emergency just prior to the accident.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Kunkel was eastbound on Highway 14 in a 2017 International grain semi and was exiting onto Third Avenue when he blacked out and his truck collided with a 2007 Freightliner semi driven by Christopher Allen Miest, 46, of Le Sueur. Miest was not injured.

Panther Pals program pairs up older, younger students

The Panther Pals program, organized by Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) teacher Teresa Kuester, kicked off a few weeks ago with five high school students signing up to use their study halls to help kindergarten, first-grade and second-grade students with one-on-one and small group reading and phonics lessons.
Seniors Alyssa Ebert and Tony Fischer, juniors Grace Kosek and Andrew Wraspir and foreign exchange student Jenske Boden are the first students to join the new program.
“I call them my Panther Pal Pioneers,” said Kuester, “because they’re just starting us out.”

Moorhead names fall dean’s list

Mark Lueders and Rachel Rusten, both of Glencoe, were named to the Minnesota State University Moorhead dean’s list for fall semester 2017. Lueders, a 2016 graduate of Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) High School, is majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology. Rusten, a 2015 GSL graduate, is majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology and geographic information science.

Named to NDSU dean’s list

Area students who were named to the North Dakota State University fall 2017 dean’s list include Brandi Pikal, Brownton, majoring in agriculture communication; Mitchell Rothstein, Glencoe, majoring in accounting; and, from Silver Lake, Russell Bayerl, majoring in mechanical engineering, Jacob Fehrenbach, majoring in political science, and Joshua Yurek, majoring in mechanical engineering. To be named to the list, a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or above on a a 4.0 scale.

Locals on UMD fall dean’s list

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) has announced its fall 2017 dean’s list. Area students named to the list include, from Glencoe: Mark Broderius, junior, majoring in mathematics and stats and actuarial science; Adam Eberhard, senior, majoring in mechanical engineering; Ryley Oliver, junior, majoring in Hispanic studies and international studies; Alexander Romano, sophomore, majoring in pre-business; and Chandler Swift, junior, majoring in computer science; and, from Plato: Mitchell Pinske, sophomore, majoring in computer science.

3rd-place finishes for varsity, junior high

On Saturday, two buses of Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Knowledge Bowlers left the high school headed in different directions. The seventh and eighth graders were headed for Willmar, where they competed in Willmar’s invitational in the junior high division. The ninth to 12th graders went to St. Francis to compete in the “Rumble on the Rum.” Both came home with third-place finishes.

LeRoy F. Penas, 81, of rural Glencoe

LeRoy Francis Penas, 81, of rural Glencoe, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, at Hutchinson Health Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Jan. 15, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake with the Rev. Paul Schumacher as the celebrant. The Holy Family Choir, accompanied by Alice Nowak, provided music.
Honorary casket bearers were Mr. Penas’ five grandchildren, Sydney, Alex and Anna Phillips and Erin and Mitchell Jaskowiak. Casket bearers were Mark Krcil, Mike Krcil, Randy Vasek, Bob Penas, Brad Shamla and Mark Hemerick.
