Spikers remain perfect in WCC West

Carrying the flag for Glencoe-Silver Lake this fall sports season has been the Panther volleyball team. In search of a fifth-consecutive Wright County Conference West title, GSL remains atop the conference standings with a 5-0 circuit mark and a 17-5 overall record.
The Panthers won their seventh consecutive match on Monday, Oct. 8, sweeping visiting Maple Lake 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 in a non-conference matchup.

Girls' soccer earns first win of season

It didn’t come easy, but the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team earned its first victory of the season by defeating host Worthington in a penalty shootout during the Section 2A play-in game on Saturday, Oct. 6.
GSL entered the game 0-12-1 during the regular season with a 1-1 tie against Faribault on Sept. 22. The 18th-seeded Panthers battled their 15th-seeded hosts to a 1-1 tie through regulation, forcing overtime and the eventual penalty kick round to decide matters.

Cross-Country runs in Swain Invitational

The Glencoe-Silver Lake cross-country teams made their annual trek to the Great White North last weekend, with the Panther girls taking ninth and the boys 16th in the 68th-annual Swain Invitational at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth.
GSL recorded 263 points to take ninth in the girls’ race out of 28 competing squads. The boys posted 416 points in taking 16th out of 32 schools in their Class A event.
Maddie Lemke was the top-placing Panther at the extensive meet. The senior paced the GSL girls with a 22nd-place time of 21 minutes, 13.0 seconds.

Netters fall in Section 2A

The full-squad season came to a close for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team with a 7-0 loss at Jordan in the quarterfinals of the Section 2A Tournament on Thursday, Oct. 4.
Top-seeded Jordan went on to win the section title four days later, after defeating Belle Plaine 7-0 in the semifinals and LeSueur-Henderson 5-2 in the final.
GSL had gone into the Jordan match off of its lone team victory of the season, 5-2 at Redwood Valley on Monday, Oct. 1. The Panthers finished off their dual match schedule with a 1-15 record this autumn.

Football in freefall after another blowout loss

A fourth consecutive blowout loss put hopes of a .500 record on the ropes as the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team was thumped 56-7 at Dassel-Cokato on Friday, Oct. 5.
The contest followed a familiar script as of late for the Panthers. The Chargers built a large early lead, with GSL unable to mount much at all in the way of an offensive or defensive threat.
A pair of first-quarter touchdown passes gave D-C more than enough cushion in the contest. However, the Chargers broke the game wide open with two more scoring passes and one run into the endzone to take a 35-0 lead into halftime.
