Fall campaign comes to a close for girls’ netters

The season came to a close for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team last week in the Section 2A individual tournament at Gustavus College in St. Peter.
GSL was represented in both singles and doubles play on Thursday, Oct. 11, recording one victory in bracket play.
The senior duo of Justine Helmbrecht and Kaitlyn Doolittle, seeded fifth, won their opening match 6-2, 6-3, over unseeded Ashlyn Doering/Payden Beran of Redwood Valley. Helmbrecht and Doolittle came up short in their follow-up, however, falling 6-4, 6-1, to fourth-seeded Anna Braun/Alyvia Behr of Jordan.

Boys’ CC wins at W-M

Another round of rain couldn’t keep the Glencoe-Silver Lake cross-country teams from the swift completion of their appointed rounds at the Watertown Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
The Panther boys took first place in the five-team competition, while the girls came in second in their 5,000-meter race.
Connor Hallaway placed third overall with a run of 18 minutes, 17.55 seconds to lead GSL to the team victory.
Right behind Hallaway was Oscar Peña, who finished fourth in 18:23.42, as the Panthers placed four runners in the top seven spots.

Soccer goes out with flair

Following a winless regular season, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team made some postseason noise before bowing out of the Section 2A Tournament last week.
After defeating Worthington in penalty kicks in the playoff opener on Saturday, Oct. 6, the Panthers exploded in their second-round sectional game at Jordan on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
A team that managed just two non-shootout goals over 14 games that preceded it, 18th-seeded GSL pounded four regulation scores past the Jaguars to win 4-3 over the 10th-seeded hosts.

Football falls again, loses to Cardinals

Despite a valiant effort, the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team lost its fifth consecutive game with a 21-0 defeat against visiting Annandale – the eighth-ranked team in Class AAA – on Friday, Oct. 12.
A scoreless first quarter was highlighted by a goal line stand from the GSL defense, which kept the Cardinals at bay from the one-yard line and forced a turnover on downs.

Glencoe-Silver Lake Superintendent Chris Sonju said the district is considering an application to the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program for a planning assistance grant to develop safer routes for students to walk and bicycle to and from school each day.
“Planning assistance grants are the first step for communities to assess their current conditions for walking and bicycling to school and decide what they need to strategically and effectively implement a Safe Routes to School program,” said Dave Cowan, SRTS coordinator.

Time is seemingly running out on street project

Nothing says welcome to Minnesota than looking at a torn up street in front of your house … amid snowflakes!
The gallows humor of Minnesotans claims there are only two seasons in this state — construction and winter. Sunday, it was a combination of the two looking out my front room window.
Even the neighborhood squirrels seem a bit confused. As I was standing near my long gone curb and gutter peering into the gaping hole that was once 14th Street, I noticed a squirrel doing the same thing. It also seemed to be thinking: What the heck happened here?
