Gymnasts welcome new faces

There are plenty of fresh faces around the Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team as eight newcomers join the nine returnees from last winter’s Panther squad.
Breana Templin and Gia Venier captain this year’s squad after being voted to the position by their teammates.
They lead a squad that also returns Mikayla Beneke, Kelsey Beneke, Aaliyah Manley, Makayla Wigern, Lena Touailat, Cadance Knick and Marissa Greeley from the 2017-18 campaign.

Girls’ cagers primed for another successful run

Coming off the first 20-win campaign in program history, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team has reshuffled its deck this winter in search of elusive postseason success.
“I think we’ve gotten to a point where we want to be getting to the subsection finals,” coach Jeff Monahan said. “The state tournament is the state tournament, but we should talk about that as a goal.”
The Panthers have been on a steady climb over the past five years, continually improving both record-wise and conference position.

Cosmos man gets probation, jail time for having sex with girl

A Cosmos man who pleaded guilty to having sex with a child will spend six months in the McLeod County Jail, spend 10 years on probation, undergo sex offender treatment and register as a predatory offender after pleading guilty to one count of criminal sexual conduct.

Stewart man gets jail time for not reporting latest address

Two years after completing prison time for not properly reporting as a predatory sex offender, a Stewart man is again guilty of not meeting the reporting regulations set by the court.
Terry Alan Manderscheid, 37, pleaded guilty in McLeod County District Court Nov. 9 to not reporting to police his new address and other information as required.

Man guilty of drug possession

A Glencoe man caught smoking marijuana in a pickup truck parked in an apartment parking lot in Hutchinson will spend the next three years on probation.
McLeod County District Court Judge Jessica Maher sentenced Jeffrey Raymond Thorson Jr. to probation Nov. 9. The sentence for the felony offense includes 15 days in the county jail. Thorson must submit to a chemical evaluation assessment and agree to follow recommendations of the assessment. He must also not possess alcohol or controlled substances, with the exception of doctor-prescribed medications, during the probation.

Getting in gear for the winter season

On Monday, Nov. 19, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys' basketball and wrestling teams began official team practices, becoming the final two Panther squads to do so.

Silver Lake votes to deny rental license renewal

The Silver Lake City Council was again faced with issues at the Villager Apartments at its meeting on Monday night.
The owner, Mike Jaunich of ATB Properties, has yet to fulfill the requirements to obtain a rental license renewal due in January of this year.
One of the main issues has been the installation of fire- proof doors in the building. City staff is working with the city attorney to pursue the issue in court which could result in up to a $750 per-day fine if the facility is not in compliance.

Delmer F. Schmidt funeral brought horses through town

Delmer F. Schmidt, of Glencoe, was a horse enthusiast. The family wanted a proper send-off with Percheron horses leading the way to his burial.
