GSL band members named to honor bands

Four members of Glencoe-Silver Lake High School Bands attended the 30th Annual Bjorling Music Festival at Gustavus Adolphus College Nov. 4-5.
Haley Lukes (flute) was a member of the “Frederic Hilary Honor Winds” while Austin Brewton (clarinet), Tison Werner (french horn), and Drew Hedtke (string bass) were members of the “Douglas Nimmo Honor Winds.” Both ensembles were named for former Gustavus Band conductors. The festival also included an honor choir and an honor string orchestra.

City gives wastewater treatment plant the go-ahead

After years of discussion, planning, design work, grant applications and politicking for funding, the Glencoe City Council finally gave construction of a wastewater treatment plant the go-ahead Monday night.
The plant will use the existing site south of Highway 212 and west of Morningside Drive along Buffalo Creek and also build new buildings on the site. The original facility and its equipment were built and installed in 1956 and updated in 1971 and again in 1992.

School board moves parking lot plan forward, awaits bid results

Hoping to address runoff and safety concerns associated with Glencoe-Silver Lake Junior-Senior High School’s parking along with space and maintenance issues at Lakeside Elementary School’s parking lot, the school board directed staff to continue work on an improvement plan.

GSL School Board split on new contracts for Sonju, Sander

In the wake of voters rejecting a proposed increase in the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District’s operating levy Nov. 6, the school board declined to renew the contracts of the district’s superintendent and its business manager.
The board was split on both proposed contract renewals. Directors Donna VonBerge, Kevin Kuester and Jamie Alsleben voted against renewing the contracts for Superintendent Chris Sonju and Michelle Sander, the district’s business manager. Directors Clark Christianson, Jason Lindeman and Anne Twiss voted for the renewals at the Nov. 13 meeting.
