Nix named to fall dean’s list

Shannon Nix, a business administration major from Glencoe, was named to the Upper Iowa University dean’s list for the 2017 fall semester. To be named to the list, a student must achieve a 3.5 grade point average and be enrolled as a full-time student.

Named to SMSU fall dean’s list

Among the students named to the Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) fall semester 2017 dean’s list were Korine Schuette, Brownton; and Ashley Alsleben, Glencoe.

Pohlmeier named chair of social services board

McLeod County Commissioner Rich Pohlmeier is the new chair of the McLeod County Welfare and Social Service Committee, which is comprised of the full county board. Pohlmeier is the 4th District commissioner. Ron Shimanski, 1st District commissioner, is the vice chair.
Fifth District Commissioner Joe Nagel was the chair in 2017; and Pohlmeier was the vice chair.
The committee had its reorganizational meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Glencoe Community, Business Fest Feb. 10

The Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce will have its Glencoe Community & Business Fest (formerly the Business Expo) Saturday, Feb. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Panther Field House.
Along with displays by local businesses, demonstrations, games, free goodies and drawings throughout the day, there will be some new, family-oriented activities, including a free photo booth from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; a children’s royalty costume contest for children 10 years and under (meet at the stage at 10:30 a.m.), and a Star Wars costume contest for all ages (meet at the stage at 1 p.m.)

DFL caucus sites announced in county

McLeod County DFL caucuses will be held Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m., at the following locations:
Glencoe-Silver Lake High School Media Center, 1825 16th St. E — cities of Glencoe, Plato and Silver Lake; and townships of Hale, Helen and Rich Valley.
Hutchinson Middle School Media Center, 1365 South Grade Rd. SW — cities of Biscay, Brownton, Hutchinson, Silver Lake and Stewart, and townships of Acoma, Collins, Hassan Valley, Hutchinson, Penn and Round Grove.
Lester Prairie City Offices, 37 Juniper St. N — Cities of Lester Prairie and Winsted and townships of Bergen and Winsted.

Report of armed person results in lockdowns in Waconia Jan. 25

Carver County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a person with a firearm near the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia on Thursday at about 1:15 p.m.

Locations announced for Sibley GOP caucuses

Locations for the Sibley County Republican Party caucuses have been announced. All caucuses are set for Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.
Locations include:
Henderson — City Hall, 600 Main St., hosting the city of Henderson and the townships of Henderson, Keslo, Jessenland and Faxon.
Gaylord — Sibley East Elementary School, Room 151, 625 Harvey Dr., hosting the cities of Gaylord and New Auburn and the townships of New Auburn, Sibley and Dryden.

Gymnasts back at home this week

The Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team competed in its final regular-season road meet of the year on Thursday, Jan. 25, falling 136.350-120.225 at New Prague.
Marissa Greeley won the individual all-around with a score of 32.550. She placed second on floor exercise with an 8.90, fifth on balance beam with a 7.95, fifth on vault at 8.525 and sixth on parallel bars at 7.175.
Gia Venier took third in the all-around with a 30.400, which included a fourth-place showing on vault (8.700). She was also fifth on floor (8.225), seventh on beam (6.900) and eighth on bars (6.575).

Boys’ hoopsters split a pair

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team missed out on a chance to return to .500 after a rough second half at Rockford turned a 20-18 halftime lead into a 54-35 loss on Friday, Jan. 26.
After an initial 18 minutes rife with turnovers from both sides, the Panthers clung to their slim two-point lead. However, the hosts found their game in the second half, blitzing the visitors 36-15 after their return from the locker room en route to a 19-point victory.

Matmen top Knights in St. Peter

Back-to-back nights of grappling action closed out the month of January for the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team.
The Panthers began last week with a trip south for a triangular meet in St. Peter on Thursday, Jan. 25.
GSL/LP went 1-for-2 on the night, defeating Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 44-30 and falling to the host Saints 58-7.
