Franklin Burke, 92, of Hutchinson

Franklin Burke was my grandfather. I have always thought of him as the “George Bailey of Fernando.” He agreed that he had a “wonderful life”.
Franklin Willis Ellery Burke was born in Fernando (rural Stewart) to Herbert and Martha (Spiering) Burke on March 25, 1925, and baptized on April 19, 1925, at his beloved St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Fernando. County needs cost/benefit analysis

Tuesday morning, in a workshop session, the McLeod County Board heard a proposal to install a security checkpoint in the new lobby of the law enforcement center and courthouse.
Representatives of the sheriff’s office noted that they had received a citizen complaint regarding the current system for checking bags at courtroom entrances. Would a one-stop, scanning station at the courthouse’s main entrance be a solution to make sure that rules were uniformly applied? Those representatives also pointed out, rightly so, that the ultimate decision lies with the County Board.

Duke, David, Lee: all will be missed

It has not been a good month for me. In the span of less than a month, I’ve lost three good friends. It’s said that bad news comes in threes.
DeWayne “Duke” Hanson died Dec. 22, Dave Heintz passed away on Thursday, Jan. 11, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care facility and my close friend and long-time Chronicle colleague Lee Ostrom died Sunday morning, Jan. 14, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
It has been one shock after another, although none of them comes as a surprise. All had serious health problems. But that does not ease the pain or sadness.
