Girls' hoops enters playoffs as No. 2 seed in 2AA North

An 18-8 regular season in the books, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team turned its attention to the postseason this week.
The Panthers put the final touches on a runner-up finish in the Wright County Conference West by closing out season sweeps against Mound Westonka and Rockford last week.
GSL held off a challenge by the upset-minded White Hawks on Tuesday, Feb. 20, eking by the visitors 71-68.
Guards Miah and Mac Monahan scored 19 and 14 points, respectively, in the win. Both players logged five rebounds, with Mac garnering nine assists and Miah four.

Boys' basketball to host NYA in sectional opener

As the final week of the regular season opened, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team learned of its postseason fate.
The Panthers were handed the No. 4 seed for the upcoming Section 2AA Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Norwood Young America in the opening round of North subsection play on Monday, March 5.
GSL, which entered this week with a 10-13 overall record, snared the fourth seed with a Quality Results Formula ranking of 65 compared to the Raiders’ rank of 87.
However, NYA defeated the Panthers 64-49 when the two teams met Jan. 20 on the Raiders’ home court.

Ruschmeier fourth at 2AA individual tourney

The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team put the finishing touches on its 2017-18 season last weekend as several members of the Panthers’ squad competed in the Section 2AA individual tournament, held Feb. 23-24 at Mankato West High School.
Carter Ruschmeier was GSL/LP’s top finishing wrestler, with the eighth-grader finishing fourth overall in the 106-pound bracket.
Ruschmeier opened his tournament with a 7-2 decision over St. Peter’s Hunter McCann in a rematch of the battle between the two in the preliminary round of the Section 2AA team tournament.
