Jolanda V. Popelka, 71, of Mayer, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, at the Victoria Care Center.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Feb. 9, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Community in Waconia with the Rev. Bennet Tran as the celebrant.
Serving as urn bearers were Mrs. Popelka’s children. Interment was in the St. Pius X Catholic Cemetery in Glencoe.
Jolanda Popelka was born May 7, 1946, in Drayton, North Dakota, the daughter of Vernon and Alma (Martinson) Dahl. On April 30, 1966, she was united in marriage to Jerome Popelka at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Minnetonka.

Alfonso Cano Jr., 61, of Litchfield, formerly of Glencoe, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at Meeker Manor in Litchfield.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe with the Rev. Anthony Stubeda officiating. Urn bearers were Michael Cano and Baltazar Cano. Interment was in the Glencoe City Cemetery.
Alfonso Cano Jr. was born March 4, 1956, in Eagle Pass, Texas, the son of Alfonso Lopez Cano and Romelia (Castillo) Cano. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in his faith as a youth. He attended school in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Reese Magnuson, a sixth grader at Glencoe-Silver Lake Schools, placed third at the Southwest West Central Service Cooperative regional spelling bee on Feb. 6 to earn the right to compete at the state spelling bee in Fergus Falls Feb. 20.
Thirty-one students from 26 districts, who won at their local level were invited to compete at the regional bee. Scores from a written round and three oral rounds determined the top 15 students who competed in the afternoon spell-down. It took 15 rounds to narrow the field to the top four students.

Kyle and Stephanie Zajicek announce the birth of their son, Oliver Kyle Zajicek, who arrived Feb. 6, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Oliver weighed 9 pounds, 9 ounces at birth and was 22 inches long. He joins brothers Theodore and Harrison. Grandparents are Mike and Sue Keenan of Glencoe and Keith Zajicek, also of Glencoe.

Elsie Graupmann, Plato, a sophomore at Concordia College, Moorhead, was named to the dean’s list for the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year. To qualify for the list, students must complete 12 credits and have a grade point average of 3.7 or better on a 4.0 scale. Graupmann is a sophomore at the college.
