Father, son come together for Restore a Wreck project

The Crow River Sno Pros, Inc,. are continuing their unique competition from last year, Restore a Wreck, bringing families to the McLeod County fairgrounds from across five states. The Restore a Wreck competition calls for parent-child teams to restore vintage snowmobiles and show them off for pride, prizes and fun.
The competition will be judged at the Sno Pros annual vintage sled show and swap meet Saturday in Hutchinson.

School Board begins first discussion on replacing operating levy

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School District’s current operating levy will expire in 2020, and the School Board will begin looking at whether it should seek a replacement levy.
Business Manager Michelle Sander brought the issue up at the board’s meeting Monday night, saying that discussions about the expiring levy should begin soon.
Superintendent Chris Sonju echoed that recommendation, saying the School Board should set a work session to review budget trends and begin planning for the future.

MnDOT plans new transportation study for Glencoe area

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is planning a new study of transportation needs in and around Glencoe, the city of Glencoe’s Personnel and Legislative Committee heard Monday afternoon.

Bids opened for first package of Brownton street, utility project

R&R Excavating, Inc., of Hutchinson, is the apparent low bidder on the first package of the city of Brownton’s comprehensive street and utility improvement project, the City Council learned at its March 6 meeting.
John Rodeberg, engineer with Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH), Inc., reminded the council that the project will be bid in several packages.
“This is the largest package of those,” said Rodeberg. The first package includes all of the subsurface and street surface work. Later bid packages will include refurbishing of the water tower and improvements to other city facilities.

GSL Knowledge Bowl captures top 2 spots at subregion meet

Like many winter activities, Knowledge Bowl has finished its regular season and is beginning the post-season leading up to the state meet. Also like many Minnesota winter activities, Knowledge Bowl can be affected by the weather. Last week, both of these statements were true.

GSL art students honored at Youth Art Month Exhibition

The Art Educators of Minnesota Youth Art Month Student Exhibition began March 5 at the Minnesota State Capitol in the North Corridor and will conclude on March 17 with a closing reception and Awards in the Rotunda from noon to 2 p.m.
Hours to view the exhibition are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 p.m to 4 p.m.

Big Little Hunting Expo set Saturday

The 2018 Big Little Hunting & Fishing Expo and Auction will be held Saturday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the McLeod County Fairgrounds in the Commercial Building (840 Century Ave., Hutchinson).
This expo is hosted by the Christian Deer Hunters Association® (C.D.H.A.). The expo is an event for the entire family and includes unique outdoor-related booths, excellent hunting and fishing seminars, great food, casting competitions, free fly-tying and fly-casting instruction, a live trout pond, games for kids, minnow races, free antler scoring, and much more.

ECFE plans barnyard fun; spring fling

The Glencoe-Silver Lake Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program has two special events coming up.
Thursday, March 22, is Barnyard Fun day. Children ages 1 through kindergarten-entry, their parents and their older siblings are invited to participate. From 10:30 to 11 a.m. that day, participants will participate in stories, crafts, songs and fun learning activities, before heading to the GSL FFA barnyard at 11 a.m., where they will have the opportunity to interact with live farm animals. The session ends at 11:30 a.m.

Brian L. Latzig, 55, of Lester Prairie

Brian L. Latzig, 55, of Lester Prairie, died Friday, March 9, 2018, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, March 13, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie with the Rev. Bob Alsleben officiating.
Casket bearers were Joel Vellmann, Randy Krueger, Duncan Cameron, Jon Dammann, Wesley Wiedenroth and Charlie Morris. Interment was in the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Lester Prairie.

Young scientists shine at fair

Sixth graders at Glencoe-Silver Lake Lakeside Elementary presented their science fair projects to the public on Friday afternoon. Above, Hannah Graf explains to Superintendent Chris Sonju that four coats of tire softener produce the best racing performance on her go-karts. Graf is the daughter of Ryan and Trisha Graf of Glencoe.
