Glencoe City Council considers jetter, tractor

The Glencoe City Council discussed replacement of its sewer jetter and a tractor for the streets and parks department at its Monday night meeting.
Gary Schreifels, public works director for water and wastewater, was first to the podium to discuss replacing a 27-year-old jetter — an expensive piece of equipment that most cities need to have on-hand at all times to clear any obstructions in the city’s underground pipes. The jetter is imperative to the operation of sewer and storm water management for the town.

County planning group makes quick work of CUPs

The McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission made short work of three applications for conditional use permits (CUPs) Wednesday, March 28, as no one from the public showed up for the hearings related to each of the three applications.
Those applications included:
• A request from Kerry Krueger to build a pole shed on property owned by Bonnie Lou Krueger near Vale Avenue in Acoma Township. The shed will be used for seasonal maintenance and as a warming area for Christmas tree sales on the property.

Area law enforcement to focus on distracted driving April 9-22

A truck driver was allegedly looking down at his cell phone for eight seconds before he slammed into a car, killing a father of three. More than two football fields — that’s how long investigators believed the driver traveled in those eight seconds.
Eight seconds — that’s all it took to change the lives of a family who will no longer see their loved one, and a truck driver who potentially faces serious jail time for a choice to look away from the road. This is just the latest distracted driving fatality in Minnesota.
When it comes to distracted driving, enough is enough.

2 injured in Easter Day accident

Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a two-vehicle crash west of Brownton on Highway 212 Sunday at about 6 p.m.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2014 Ford Edge, driven by Collin Patrick Brehmer, 26, of Hutchinson, was westbound on Highway 212 and had slowed to turn left onto Ulm Avenue when it was rear-ended by a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Josh Phillip Crooks, 28, of Morton.
Brehmer and a passenger in his vehicle, 25-year-old Ashley Jo Rickheim of rural Stewart, were taken to Hutchinson Health for treatment of injuries and later released.

Man charged in drug-related death

A Minneapolis man has been charged with third-degree murder in connection with a Watertown woman’s death, according to the Carver County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said deputies responded March 23 at 5:55 p.m. to a medical involving an unresponsive adult female in the 200 block of Westminster Avenue NW in Watertown. Olivia Rose Zorbas, 19, was discovered deceased. Deputies noticed evidence of recent intravenous drug use and suspected that Zorbas had overdosed on controlled substances.
