‘Sound the Alarm’ effort coming to Brownton, SL, Stewart, Hutch

The American Red Cross asks everyone to help Sound the Alarm in McLeod County and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires. Community members can register for free smoke alarm installations and volunteer to help at events.

Brownton OKs bid for street, utility project

The Brownton City Council officially awarded the bid for the underground utility and street surface portion of its comprehensive improvement project at a special meeting April 16.
The council had tabled the awarding of the bid pending approval by Rural Developoment of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which is providing low-interest loans and grants to help finance the project.
The low bidder was R&R Excavating, Inc., of Hutchinson, with a bid of $4.84 million. It was the lowest of six bids the city received for the work.

Sibley County sheriff will not seek re-election

Sibley County Sheriff Bruce Ponath will not seek re-election, he announced on Monday.
“After 30 years in law enforcement, I have decided not to seek re-election for the upcoming term this year,” Ponath said in a written statement. “I truly thank the citizens for their support. It has been a very humbling experience to serve the citizens of Sibley County and something I will always cherish. The citizens of Sibley County can take pride and comfort knowing Sibley County continues to be one of the safest places to live in the state.”

Son born to Carlson family

Trevor and Alissa Carlson of Silver Lake announce the arrival of a son, Bjorn Vasek Carlson, who was born April 17, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Bjorn weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 21 inches long at birth. He joins a sister, Milena. Grandparents are Randy and Julie Vasek of Silver Lake and Tom and Pat Carlson of Chaska.

Son born to Glencoe couple

A son, Brady Paul Critzer, was born April 21, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services, to Courtney Hanes and Damian Critzer of Glencoe. Brady weighed 5 pounds, 10 ounces, and was 18 inches long at birth. He joins siblings Alyssa and Rylee Critzer. Grandparents are Denise Hanes of Glencoe, Paul Hanes of Waconia, and Sam and Kathy Critzer of Mankato.

Jerabeks announce birth

Jon and Beth Jerabek, Silver Lake, announce the birth of their son, Jonah Stephen Jerabek, who arrived April 21, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Jonah weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 21-1/2 inches long at birth. Grandparents are Gary and Joyce Jerabek and Steve and Jane Dennison, all of Silver Lake.

Bruce Brummond, 100, of Illinois

Bruce Brummond, 100, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, formerly of Hutchinson, died peacefully Friday, April 13, 2018, at JourneyCare in Barrington, Illinois.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, April 19, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson with the Rev. Jerry Meidl officiating. Bev Wangerin was the organist and Bobbi Ludewig was the song leader. Musical selections were “Jesus Christ is Risen Today,” “Amazing Grace,” “On Eagles Wings,” “Song of Farewell” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Lorraine M. Weberg, 85, of Gaylord

Lorraine Weberg, 88, of Gaylord, died Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care in Glencoe.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 23, at Norwegian Grove Lutheran Church, Sibley Township, Sibley County, with the Rev. Kyle Madson officiating. Janet Tollefson was the organist. Soloist Justin Rierson sang “Softly and Tenderly.” Congregational hymns were “Heaven is My Home,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “I Know That My Redeemer Lives,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “I’m But a Stranger Here.”
Interment was in the church cemetery.

Marlene Bruch, 84, of Arlington

Marlene Bruch, 84, of Arlington, died Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the Arlington Good Samaritan Society.
Memorial services were held Friday, April 20, at Zion Lutheran Church in Green Isle Township, with interment in the church cemetery.
