Panthers primed for quick and challenging campaign

After a quick exit in last year’s section playoffs, the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team has been chomping at the bit to get its new season started.
However, Mother Nature has been calling games left and right, leaving the Panthers cooped up indoors for almost the entire spring thus far.
“It’s the first time in years that when I say, ‘would anyone like fly balls in the parking lot?’ and every kid raises his hand,” coach Dean Schwirtz said. “They know it’s 30 degrees out, but they don’t care. They just want out.”

GSL girls take to the track led by a new head coach

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ track and field team numbers 40 strong this spring and is led by a new head coach as Shawn Fettig takes over the reins of the program from Robb DeCorsey.
It’s been a slow go so far for Panthers, who have been stuck indoors for the most part due to winter’s snowy grip for the better part of five weeks since field athletes commenced their season with a scrimmage at the Jordan Community Center all the way back on March 23.

Panther boys enter 2018 with record high numbers

A bumper crop of student-athletes came out for this spring’s Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ track and field team. A total of 44 boys comprise this spring’s team – the highest number ever for the program.
In spite of the record turnout, a winter that would not let go cast a damper on the first part of the season.
“We have had to modify many practices this season,” coach Josh Metcalf said. “Five weeks into the season and have yet to set up the high jump and pole vault pits and bring the hurdles out to the track.”

Panthers take second, fifth at Foley

Entering the week as the only local varsity program to get in any of its planned competitions, the Glencoe-Silver Lake track and field teams headed north to Foley for their second indoor meet of the season last weekend.
The Panther boys finished in a two-way tie with Pierz for second at the meet, with each team gaining 65 points. The GSL girls took fifth with a highly mathematical score of 58.9285 points.

Kyle Christensen finished first in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.90 seconds to help pace the Panthers to their runner-up result.
