William ‘Bill’ Genz, 66, rural Winthrop

William “Bill” Genz, 66, of rural Winthrop, died Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at his home in Bismarck Township, Sibley County.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 11, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Fernando with the Rev. Aaron Albrecht officiating. Loretta Ahlbrecht was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Just as I Am” and “Amazing Grace.”
Casket bearers were Scott Katzenmeyer, Mark Katzenmeyer, Joel Hansch, Ron Bullert, Scott Schuette and Wade Dwinnell. Military honors were by Brownton American Legion Post 143. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mathias P. Wirtz, 74, Tucson, Arizona

Mathias “Matt” Wirtz, 74, of Tucson, Arizona, died March 29, 2018.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tucson, Arizona, with interment of ashes in Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Marana, Arizona.
Mr. Wirtz was born in Glencoe to the late Francis and Barbara Wirtz. He was married to Mary Wirtz for over 51 years.

Son born to Wiblemo family

Stephen and Brea Louise Ettel Wiblemo of Glencoe announce the arrival of a son, Bear Louis Wiblemo, who was born April 9, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Bear weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces, and was 21-1/2 inches long at birth. He joins a brother, Stephen William Wiblemo II. Grandparents are Terri and Jerry Wiblemo of Lynd and Greg and Cindy Ettel of Glencoe.

Pinske accepted at UM-Morris

Austin Pinske of Plato has been accepted at and has chosen to attend the University of Minnesota, Morris. Pinske will graduate from Glencoe-Silver Lake High School June 1, and will attend Morris beginning in fall 2018. He is the recipient of an Achievement Scholarship, which is renewable up to four years

Weekend blizzard dumps on area

Snow removal crews were still busy on Monday trying to clear up after a winter blizzard that dumped 16 inches of snow or more Saturday into Sunday. Gusty winds created large snow drifts, and numerous vehicles ended up in ditches or stuck on roadways. Another four to six inches of snow is predicted for today (Wednesday) in the area.

A pre-blizzard foray onto Stevens Seminary Stadium is the closest members of the Glencoe-Silver Lake track and field team have come to an outdoor competition this season.
