Brewers fall to Isles in opener

It wasn’t the way the Glencoe Brewers wanted to start the season, as the home side fell to Gaylord 7-6 on a sun-soaked afternoon at Vollmer Field.
The visitors took a swift 4-0 lead in the top of the first and carried a 5-3 advantage midway through the contest.
Glencoe fought back with a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth to seize its lone lead of the day at 6-5. The edge proved short-lived, however, as Gaylord rallied with two runs in its final at bat before holding the Brewers at bay in the bottom of the ninth for the one-run win.

Brownton rallies for big road win

It was worth the wait for the Brownton Bruins, with an 18-9 win at LeSueur-Henderson in what became the team’s season opener on Sunday, April 29, after a pair of postponements earlier in the month.
While the day ended triumphantly for the visitors, the early innings belonged to the hosts. The Braves took a 7-1 lead after two innings and led 9-3 after five frames before the Bruins awoke from their long winter’s hibernation.

GSL softball opens season with a quick cram session

The Glencoe-Silver Lake softball team got its long-delayed season started last week by diving headlong into its Wright County Conference West schedule. Early results did not prove tremendously kind to the Panthers, with the team going 1-4 in its first five contests.
GSL opened the season by welcoming Mound Westonka to town on Thursday, April 26. The White Hawks never trailed, scoring one run in the third inning, two in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh en route to a 9-1 win.

GSL track and field takes it outdoors for two meets

After a pair of indoor meets to begin the season, the Glencoe-Silver Lake track and field teams made it outdoors at last with competitions at Rockford and Sibley East last week.
The Panthers opened last week with the girls finishing first and the boys third in a Wright County Conference quadrangular meet at Rockford on Tuesday, April 24.
Zoe Christensen headlined the afternoon by re-setting her own school record in shot put. The senior broke her old record by over a foot with a toss of 41 feet, six inches to top the entire field by over 11 feet.

Panther baseball team opens season with three wins

No longer cooped up in a cage, the Panthers let loose with a roar.
The Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team opened its season with a trio of victories as its season commenced a full 20 days late last week.
GSL commenced its abbreviated 2018 campaign with back-to-back blitzings of host Rockford in a Wright County Conference West matchup on Thursday, April 26, winning by scores of 7-1 and 16-3.
Game One saw the Panthers blow open a still-close contest with a 10-run sixth inning en route to a 13-run victory.
